Vinland saga a real gem! The story of a Viking and his personal transformation [ENG/SPA]

Who would have thought that I would see an anime again, it's been a long time since I stopped being attracted to this type of Japanese animation, since my focus and time available have been focused on watching more serious material and that is apart from the fantasy that we all know that Japanese animation offers, however, this one in particular has left me speechless, it departs from everything new that has come out in the anime market and has left more than one person astonished.

Quien iba a pensar que volvería a ver un anime, ya hace bastante tiempo dejó de atraerme este tipo de animación japonesa, ya que mi enfoque y tiempo disponible los e centrado en ver material mas serio y que se aparte de la fantasia que todos sabemos que ofrece la animación japonesa, sin embargo, este en especial me a dejado sin palabras, se aparta de todo lo nuevo que ha salido al mercado del anime y a dejado atónito a mas de una persona.

I am a super fan of Viking history, I have seen every series and movie that has been released, the most recent Viking of Valhalla and the famous series of History: Vikings, the best I've seen in a long time, for that reason when I came across a promotion about a Japanese anime whose story is Viking, I did not hesitate to look for what was its premise, starting because I was very surprised to see that this type of animation is used to tell this kind of story.

Soy super fanatico de la historia vikinga, he visto cuanta serie y película se ha estrenado, de las mas recientes Vikingos del Valhalla y la afamada serie de History: Vikingos, de lo mejor que he visto en mucho tiempo, por esa razón al cruzarme con una promoción sobre un anime japonés cuya historia es vikinga, no dude en buscar cual era su premisa, empezando porque me sorprendió mucho ver que este tipo de animación se use para contar este tipo de historia.

I was curious to see this series mainly because I love the idea of knowing that the Vikings arrived much earlier to America than the English, Spanish or Portuguese, and most movies, even the oldest ones like The Vikings from 1958 focus on telling the story of the Norwegian-Danish invasion of English territory along with the adventures of the supposedly great warrior Ragnar Lodbrok.

Se apoderó de mi la curiosidad de ver esta serie principalmente porque me encanta la idea de saber que los vikingos llegaron mucho antes a America que los ingleses, españoles o portugueses, y la mayoria de peliculas, incluso las mas antiguas como The Vikings de 1958 se centran en contar la historia de la invasión noruega - danesa a territorio ingles junto a las aventuras del supuesto gran guerrero Ragnar Lodbrok.

But the history of Leif Erikson, who according to the Viking sagas, is believed to be the first one to set foot on North American soil coming from Europe, is rarely mentioned in series and movies. I think one of the few movies that talks about Vikings in America and develops all its history there is Pathfinder, but it is based more on the defense against Viking slavers or the development of settlements in that place, but apparently the anime Vinland will delve much more into this topic.

Pero muy poco se toca la historia en series y películas sobre Leif Erikson que según las sagas vikingas, se cree fue el primero en pisar suelo norteamericano proveniente de europa. Creo que una de las poca películas que habla de vikingos en america y desarrolla todo su historia ahí es Pathfinder, pero se basa mas en la defensa contra vikingos esclavistas o el desarrollo de asentamientos en ese lugar, pero al parecer el anime Vinland se adentrará muchisimo mas en este tema.

The two-season series tells the story of Thorfinn Karlsefni, a young boy from Iceland, son of a great warrior Thors the "Troll of Jom" who with his wife fled Norway, tired of the Viking war and lifestyle. Thors in this new land seems to become a true warrior as he finds true meaning to his life beyond his struggles, but his past haunts him and becomes his victim.

La serie cuenta con dos temporadas que narra la historia de Thorfinn Karlsefni, un pequeño niño de Islandia hijo de un gran guerrero Thors el "Troll de Jom" quien junto a su esposa huyeron de Noruega, cansados de la guerra y estilo de vida vikingos. Thors en estas nuevas tierra parece convertirse en un guerrero de verdad al encontrar un verdadero significado a su vida mas allá de sus luchas, pero su pasado le persigue y se convierte en su víctima.

The first season perfectly deceives its audience, we witness a young Thorfinn immersed since his childhood in a continuous quest for revenge after his father is killed by a Viking pirate named Askeladd. He believes that he is fueled by hatred for this man, who uses him as his warrior, becoming a legend, achieving unimaginable feats of combat, all with the excuse of one day having a duel with Askeladd to avenge his father.

La primera temporada engaña perfectamente a su audiencia, presenciamos a un joven Thorfinn inmerso desde su niñas en una búsqueda continua de venganza luego que su padre es asesinado por un pirata vikingo llamado Askeladd. El cree alimentado por el odio hacia este hombre, que lo utiliza como su guerrero, llegando a convertirse en toda una leyenda, logrando hazañas de combate inimaginables, todo con al excusa de poder tener algun dia un duelo con Askeladd para vengar a su padre.

Up to this point everything happens as every Viking story you know, wars, invasions, deaths, looting, conquest, battles of formidable warriors, all of that traps you at times as you watch the story of the Viking invasion of England unfold. It is impressive to see a young man so immersed in hatred and bloodlust that at times you come to sympathize with his crusade and want him to achieve his goal.

Hasta este momento todo transcurre como toda historia vikinga que conoces, guerras, invasiones, muertes, saqueos, conquista, batallas de guerreros formidables, todo eso te atrapa por momentos mientras observas como a la par se desarrolla la historia de la invasión vikinga a Inglaterra. Es impresionante ver a un joven sumido en el odio y sed de sangre que por momentos llegas a simpatizar con su cruzada y quieres que logre su cometido.

I don't pretend to tell if Thorfinn achieves his goal or not, but the end of season one, its last chapter is literally titled: "End of the prologue" that left me stunned! What I had witnessed until that moment was only the introduction to the story, which began in 2019 and after 4 years in this 2023 a surprising second season was released, which shows the true face of the story, which is not about revenge, hatred or violence.

No pretendo contar si Thorfinn logra su cometido o no, pero el final de la temporada uno, su ultimo capítulo se titula literalmente: "Fin del prologo" ¡eso me dejo atonito! Lo que había presenciado hasta ese momento era solo la introducción a la historia, que inició en 2019 y que luego de 4 años en este 2023 se estrenó una sorprendente segunda temporada, que muestra la verdadera cara de la historia, que no se trata de venganza, ni odio ni violencia.

The second season is a story of transformation, just to give you a small idea of what happens, now we see a Thorfinn enslaved on a farm in Denmark, working the land to sow wheat, his face no longer reflects hatred, now he is a man with an empty look, lost without purpose, without reason to live. This second season contrasts greatly with the first, it completely abandons the traditional narrative of violence.

La segunda temporada es una historia de transformación, solo para darles una pequeña idea de lo que ocurre, ahora vemos a un Thorfinn esclavizado en una granja en dinamarca, trabajando la tierra para sembrar trigo, su rostro ya no refleja odio, ahora es un hombre con una mirada vacía, perdido sin propósito, sin razón para vivir. Esta segunda temporada contrasta grandemente con la primera, abandona por completo la narrativa tradicional de violencia.

It can be very slow, but that's what it's about, the transformation of a man is not exactly overnight, I think they succeeded in developing it in such a way, if you are patient when watching this season you will discover the odyssey of a man to transform his life leaving the weapons forming bonds of love and friendship, whose sins will still haunt him, that the dead of the past torment him and drag him into the abyss, but for this not to happen he tries to be another, a real man who is not necessarily a warrior.

Puede llegar a ser muy lenta, pero de eso se trata, la transformación de un hombre no es precisamente de la noche a la mañana, creo que en eso le atinaron al desarrollarla de tal manera, si eres paciente al ver esta temporada descubrirás la odisea de un hombre para transformar su vida dejando las armas formando lazos de amor y amistad, cuyos pecados aun le perseguirán, que los muertos del pasado lo atormentan y le arrastran al abismo, pero para que esto no ocurra intenta ser otro, un verdadero hombre que no necesariamente es un guerrero.

This second season leaves a great message, through a character who breaks with the stigmas of the male gender, who deconstructs his identity to find true masculinity, that it is not about how strong you are, it is about character, ethics, principles and being able to not separate yourself from them in the face of adversity, that it is a process and that you are not forged as one overnight.

Esta segunda temporada deja un gran mensaje, a través de un personaje que rompe con los estigmas del género masculino, que deconstruye su identidad para encontrar la verdadera masculinidad, que no se trata de lo fuerte que eres, se trata del carácter, de la ética, de principios y de ser capaz de no separarse de ellos ante la adversidad, de que es un proceso y que no te forjas como uno de la noche a la mañana.

I highly recommend watching this anime, I would have loved it to be a series, because it would be more taken into account and would win every award there is, its message is phenomenal. I look forward to the next season to see how this character continues his crusade and transformation as a person now in Vinlandia.

Recomiendo ampliamente vean este anime, me hubiera encantado que fuera una serie, porque sería mas tomado en cuenta y ganaria cuanto premio hay, su mensaje es fenomenal. Espero con ansias la siguiente temporada para ver como este personaje continua su cruzada y transformación como persona ahora en Vinlandia.
