It is freezing cold today, I guess it's a good day to replace the windows in my house

Way too cold for this

break.png

Back in October, I had all my windows measured so that they could be replaced. It took a bit longer than anticipated for the new windows to be made, but the day has finally come for new my windows to get installed.

IMG_4719.jpg

Last night, we had a pretty bad snow storm come through and we may be getting some more snow throughout the day today. Hopefully the installation goes smoothly and I am not stuck with a giant hole in my house for some odd reason.

The bay window in the master bedroom is what i am most excited to get replaced. This room gets so hot during the summer time. The windows on my house are over 20 years old and have been needed to be upgraded for a while now.

IMG_4725.jpg

The windows I got for this room are their top of the line energy efficient windows, so I am pretty sure I will notice a difference. I have a list of things that we will be doing to upgrade parts of our home that I have been putting off. Growing up in the military, I never really lived anywhere for over 4 years, so I never worried about this type of stuff, but since we have been in this home for almost 10 years now, we may as well upgrade some stuff because I don't see us moving any time soon.

The windows cost me about $15,000. The next thing we are going to be planning on doing is removing all the carpet and putting some wood flooring down. The carpet in our home is really old and our cats have scratched up parts of it. Good thing my wife works for a construction company because she has a lot of contacts at work that we can use. I wish I would have known that before getting the windows installed because we probably could have saved some money with that.

It should take about two days to complete the installation of the windows. Hopefully there aren't any issues with it. A piece of the new window for my kitchen broke because of the cold, so I am hoping that doesn't happen to any of the other windows. Luckily they didn't remove the old window. They let me know it should be about four weeks for the new window to be made and then they will put that in. I can't wait to see how well these new windows work and if they are worth the money. At least when we do decide to sell our home, we should get that value back.

Man you need to do that during sumemr or spring! lol here is freezing cold I can't even open the door to the dog for a long time lol.

I would have loved to do it some other time than the dead of winter. It took my windows about a month and a half longer than anticipated for them to be ready, so that is why I am stuck getting them installed now. They are moving pretty quickly to get them done though, so that is nice.

I understand that, I felt like that when I planned to install solar panels, it was forecasted for April but with many delays about licenses, etc I could only install in August! Missed many sunny months of good energy power production haha

avatar

Solar is something I am considering soon as well. I just dont know if I will be in this house long enough to benefit from that. It will be around $25-$30k for solar here on my home.

avatar

it is a big investment for sure, Canada is a good place right now for a project like that since the gov is giving 5k$ of rebate plus financing with 0% interest rates, without that I was going to postpone for sure

avatar

That's a good deal man. I haven't looked into what our government here does for solar yet. I think all new construction should make it mandatory for solar to be installed.

avatar

I've been doing that math as well, and if I finance my solar, my payments will be almost the same that I'm paying for power now. The difference will be as time goes on, the payments are fixed, and power prices tend to go up. I'm almost pulling the trigger....

avatar

There are definitely benefits to getting solar if you plan on staying in the home. I am really tempted to get it but I don't want to feel stuck here.

avatar

Yep, why not in the winter… 😉
I hope they keep you warmer. And no other things happen with the new windows.
Have a lovely midweek 👋🏻

avatar

All the freezing today will be worth it when they are done being installed.

We had our french slider and huge slider window installed in mid February 2017 when it was 0F outside. They are right next to each other so I walled off the house with plastic to keep some heat in while the work was done. Cost us near the same for ours but the slider was custom. A major upgrade though.

avatar

Nice. We are replacing our sliding door that leads to our backyard too. That is one of the things I am really excited for. Our old sliding door is old.

avatar

Did you get the good thermal reflective windows? Ours block the UV and it is quite noticeable comparing the feel on the inside between them and our old windows.

avatar

Ya, they are high end energy efficient windows. I can already feel a difference upstairs. Tomorrow they are coming back and finishing the rest of the windows.

avatar

Since there is no moving out any time soon, it is paramount you upgrade everything to your taste.

Cheers

avatar

I agree. Hopefully it isn't too expensive for all of the stuff I want to do.

avatar

The anticipation of better insulation and energy efficiency with the new windows must be exciting, especially given the age of your current ones. It's a big step in home improvement and certainly an investment in comfort.😁

A bit Off-Topic: I am actually considering applying to Job in the US. Any suggestions for a nice State? 😁

avatar

It all really depends on the climate you like and what stuff you like to do in your free time. Utah is good for outdoor activities but northern Utah is over crowded and the air is really bad. Those are the main reasons I want to get out of this area. Southern Utah is nice but it gets pretty hot in the summer.

Nice pics @derangedvisions ! In Argentina we have 32°C , We need some snow over here 😅

avatar

Thanks man. I am hoping to visit Argentina one day. Hopefully I can start traveling again soon.

I’m glad you’ve got a few thing that you’d love to change about your home
This is our hot season here in my country and I hope to experience what snow feels like someday

avatar

I hope you get to see some snow one day. I can’t wait until I don’t live near the snow. I am over it

avatar

The windows are very expensive!! :/ But I agree, it’s very cold and you need to be very well equipped at home. Anyway they look amazing and allows you to see that beautiful landscape!!

avatar

Today it is cold like this in every country but in such a weather when we go out and see snow, the happiness is also very high.

avatar

Seems like this year winter season is actually cold much more than the previous years

avatar

The weather must have actually been so much cold. So cold out there 🤒
