All of us who have been able to enjoy SpongeBob cartoons know that he lives in an underwater city called Bikini Bottom. But did you know it is named that because it is located under a real place called Bikini Atoll located in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean? The atoll is made up of a group of islands surrounded by a coral reef so there is a great diversity of marine life. Immediately after the culmination of World War II, the United States decided to resume nuclear weapons testing at Bikini Atoll. In the years from 1946 to 1958, 67 nuclear explosions were carried out with a power seven thousand times greater than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. These explosions generated geological changes and radioactivity, which caused marine animals to become the creatures strange from the animated series. These living beings are obviously not normal, they have human aspects, they wear clothes and they can talk.

Todos los que hemos podido disfrutar de las caricaturas de Bob Esponja sabemos que vive en una ciudad submarina llamada Fondo de Bikini. ¿Pero sabían lleva ese nombre porque se encuentra debajo de un lugar real que se llama el atolón Bikini situado en las islas Marshall en el Océano Pacífico? El atolón está conformado por un conjunto de islas rodeadas de un arrecife de coral por lo que hay gran diversidad de vida marina. Inmediatamente después de la culminación de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los Estados Unidos decidieron reanudar las pruebas de armas nucleares en el atolón de Bikini. This theory claims that Bikini Bottom was created due to the radiation in that area and that Sandy is a super intelligent squirrel sent to the underwater city by the North American army to investigate the consequences of the detonations and that is why he uses the suit and the helmet to protect yourself. Sandy ended up liking life in Bikini Bottom and stayed there to live. Supposedly the proof that this theory is real is an episode in which a rock causes all the beings in Bikini Bottom to transform into their most realistic version. Sandy looks worried and warns everyone that this rock is bad. She is the only one who is not affected by the rock at all since she is wearing the suit, so she tries to save them all. At the end of the episode everything returns to "normal", that is, to the characters we know. It is said that this rock had a type of radiation that counteracted what they possessed. This episode does make us believe that this theory may be real. So far no one from the animation and production team has confirmed the veracity of this theory; so we cannot ensure that it is true. What is real is that the cartoon's director Stephen Hillenburg did confirm that the name Bikini Bottom was inspired by Bikini Atoll. I think this theory makes a lot of sense but I can't give it as true. What do you think?

A Arenita le terminó gustando la vida en Fondo de Bikini y se quedó a vivir ahí. Supuestamente la prueba de que esta teoría es real es un episodio en el que una roca hace que todos los seres de Fondo de Bikini se transformen en su versión más realista. Arenita se muestra preocupada y les advierte a todos que esta roca es mala. Es la única a la que la roca no le afecta en nada ya que lleva puesto el traje, por lo que intenta salvarlos a todos. Al final del episodio todo vuelve a la "normalidad", o sea, a los personajes que conocemos. Se dice que esta roca tenía un tipo de radiación que hacía que se contrarrestara la que ellos poseían. Este episodio sí nos hace creer que esta teoría puede ser real. Hasta ahora nadie del equipo de animación y producción ha confirmado la veracidad de esta teoría; por lo que no podemos asegurar que sea cierta. Lo que sí es real es que el director de la caricatura Stephen Hillenburg sí confirmó que el nombre de Fondo de Bikini estaba inspirado en el atolón Bikini. Yo creo que esta teoría tiene mucho sentido pero no la puedo dar como cierta. ¿Ustedes que creen?
