Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu - I want that mask

Little by little I am getting more and more into anime movies, with this review that I am going to share is already the third one I see and I must admit that there is a whole universe of wonderful stories that until recently I ignored, perhaps my skepticism was because they were only animations for children, but nothing further from the truth. So far I have seen mature stories, good dramas, but above all, stories of romance and love that have the ability to touch your heart, I love the way the Japanese create particular situations in which two people are predestined to be together.

Nakitai Watashi wa Neko o Kaburu is a 2020 movie produced by Studio Colorido and distributed by Netflix, the genre is drama, fantasy and romance, in Spanish it was given the name “Amor de gata”, name that by the way could not be more accurate taking into account what we see in the movie. I got to this movie thanks to TikTok, scrolling in that sea of content I saw a scene in which a boy told a beautiful white kitten that he loved her, that seemed very tender to me and I immediately decided to look for what anime it was about.

This movie takes us to the typical Japanese high school, Sasaki, is a girl with a very particular personality, she is crazy, extroverted, funny, but inside she hides frustrations and sadness for family issues that affect her a lot. She is in love with a boy named Hinode, but he never pays attention to her, in fact, it seems that he does not like Sasaki. Hinode, on the other hand, is a boy with a much calmer and reserved personality, who is also going through complicated circumstances because the family business is not going well and he feels frustrated because he can't do anything about it.

One day, Sasaki meets a suspicious giant talking cat, he takes advantage of Sasaki's weakness and frustration and tells her that he can give her a magic mask with which she can turn into a cat whenever she wants, that way she could escape from home and go visit Hinode, or at least observe him from afar. So Sasaki takes that habit and in the afternoons, after coming home from school, she would go to Hinode's house and even manages to establish a nice relationship, Hinode likes that beautiful white cat that visits him in the afternoons and in that sense a relationship of attachment is generated. Sasaki of course couldn't be happier, but deep down she would like it to be her human version that Hinode loves.

I won't tell you more so as not to give you any more spoilers, but I must tell you that the rest of the story is enchanting, full of magic, fantasy and with an ending that touches the heart.

The first impression that comes to my mind of this film is that it is light, it is for all kinds of audiences, but especially for those of us who like animals. The animation is not the best, but it is totally acceptable, I think it perfectly fulfills the purpose of a film of this style that does not necessarily require a lot of graphic depth. The fantasy is managed quite well, since beyond the fact that we see magical cats and transformations, it is still the interpersonal relationships that rule the destiny of the film.

In conclusion, it is a film for all audiences that fulfills the function of entertaining, making us laugh and even bring a little tear to our eye. It is beautiful to see kittens involved in this type of plot in which the feelings of two people are at stake, these are very well animated and generate a lot of tenderness, I particularly melt that those big bright eyes, especially those of the white kitten. This movie makes your imagination fly, it's interesting to think that you can have a mask with which you can transform into a cat whenever you can, I would definitely want one of those.
