Crime can negatively affect not only perpetrators but even their loved ones that actually aren’t involved in it. That includes the protagonist of No Alibi, 2000 Canadian thriller directed by Bruce Pittman. Bob Valenz (played by Dean Cain) is a workaholic New York yuppie whose brother Phil (played by Peter Stebbings) is his complete opposite. Phil wants to enjoy good life with as little work as possible and when opportunity strikes, he steals some VCRs. Unbeknownst to him, VCRs have their electronic components removed in order to stash money owned by vicious criminal Vic Haddock (played by Eric Roberts). Before the theft Phil borrowed Bob’s car and because of it Haddock believes that Bob took money. Bob thus becomes target of Haddock’s plan that involves Camille (played by Lexa Doig), his beautiful associate who tries to seduce him in order to obtain information about hidden money.

Made with low budget, this relatively obscure film is likely to be of interest only to the fans of Lexa Doig, Canadian actress who was at the time of production still haven’t played title role in Andromeda, science fiction TV series that would bring her stardom. Her presence, that would be of even bigger interest to male fans due to few steamy love scenes in which she appears without clothes, however, isn’t enough to make this film particularly memorable. The reason for that is in the script by Ivan Kane and John Schaeffer that made all the characters (with exception of Camille) one-dimensional and all the events in the plot predictable, with only exception being somewhat unconventional ending. Even bigger problem is pacing and plot resolving itself too early, so scriptwriters artificially prolong the running time with few unconvincing plot twists. On the other hand, Pittman directs film in a professional manner, Canadian locations are still able to pass for New York City and Eric Roberts again shows that he can play psychopathic villains with great ease. This, however, isn’t enough to recommend this film to anyone with better viewing alternatives.

This movie is making me remember the crime my cousin committed a few days ago. It affected his wife and children. If you commit a crim, just have in mind that it is not only you that will be affected
