Canadian director Sydney J. Furie had successful career in 1960s Britain, and, later, Hollywood, during which he showed great genre versatility, making interesting and memorable films that included musical, drama, horror, thriller and action. Like with so many film makers, the latter stages of his career weren’t that successful, and, although he remained prolific in his work, most of it was on television or in the realm of low budget direct-to-video films. Many of those turned out to be quite obscure, including 2002 action thriller Partners in Action.

Protagonist, played by Armand Assante, is Jack Cunningham, a former policeman who, despite being out of service, is still determined to fight crime, especially if it involves his former colleagues. He intends to uncover their participation in major drug dealing ring, but his efforts don’t go unnoticed and he gets framed for the murder he didn’t commit. The incident was, however, witnessed by Teddy (played by Douglas Smith, credited as “Doug Smith”), a thrill-seeking teenager who decides to help Jack prove his innocence.

Partners in Action became obscure for a reason and Sydney J. Furie is probably happy with its obscurity. While the basic premise isn’t particularly original and the film doesn’t hide low level of budget, a decent director would have delivered solid, or at least passable, film even under such limitations. And Sydney J. Furie, with his long career and rich experience, is more than decent director. But you couldn’t tell if you watched this film, which is made with complete lack of care and commitment. That includes even such iconic actor like Armand Assante who apparently took Partners in Action as an opportunity to deliver what appears to be Steven Seagal impersonation, including not only Seagal’s looks, but also his acting style. Rather underwhelming result of such efforts makes this film look even less inspired that it would otherwise be. Lack of humour that would have made this film at least passable makes Partners in Action complete waste of time.
