What usually amounts to happy ending in most Hollywood romantic films is just a job for the protagonist of The Wedding Planner, 2001 romantic comedy directed by Adama Shankman. Mary Fiore (played by Jennifer Lopez) is one of the best and most sought for wedding planners in San Francisco. However, her own romantic life leaves much to be desired and she all but reconciled that she will never be married herself, explaining this with the lack of proper men around her. Just when she is to organise wedding of Internet entrepreneur Fran Donnelly (played by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras) fate smiles and she meets young and charming paediatrician Dr. Steven Edison (played by Matthew McConaughey). Two of them are spending romantic evening, but soon things get complicated.

Anyone who fails to realise why the protagonist will have difficulties in finding romantic bliss has either failed to watch film’s trailer or any Hollywood romantic comedy in past half a century or so. And most viewers, even those who aren’t well versed in tropes and cliches, are all but certain to realise with whom the protagonist will end. Scriptwriters Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis have tried to make The Wedding Planner for years. When they finally got the chance, all they could do to make their film different from other romantic comedies was character of Mary’s father (played by Alex Rocco) who tries to set up his daughter with good-looking Italian man (played by fashion model Justin Chambers with the skill comparable with Cindy Crawford in Fair Game). All this achieved it was to prolong the running time of The Wedding Planner to almost unbearable 103 minutes. This film, although is supposed to be a comedy, simply lacks humour and the romance is reduced to corniest of all cliches.

The Wedding Planner represented directorial debut of Adam Shankman, who was until that time best known as choreographer. Despite that, film lacks proper dance scenes. Jennifer Lopez try to put some effort in her role, but Matthew McConaughey seems to be quite disinterested and lacking any chemistry with her. The only good thing about The Wedding Planner is San Francisco scenery, but that city have been used for locations for countless films that are much better than this.
