It was to be expected. Especially with such a big domestic market like China. Just like in neighbouring India, where local cinema industry, with billion potential viewers, could have thrived unbothered by Hollywood, even without political or economic conflict.

Historically speaking, external geopolitical conflicts don't always have to have detrimental effects on national cinema industries. German cinema began to thrive during WW1, when local filmmakers ceased to be bothered by previously dominant French films.
