I think that, in the long run, whole concept of television season is going to be abandoned and that all television shows are going to be standalone products or what used to be called "limited series".

The idea that television show must be divided into seasons is based on parameters established by US broadcast television in 1950s. Those very same rules, that, for example, mandated that sitcom and any comedy show must not have an episode longer than 22 minutes, while the episode of any drama show must be limited to 45 minutes. And those rules were established by advertisers who filled one quarter of airtime with ads.

In 21st Century, with streaming and subscriptions, and with audience increasingly oriented towards binge watching and convenience, those old models simply can't work.
