[ENG+ESP] Movie Review: Mr. Monk's Last Case.

Mr. Monk's latest case has arrived and it's time to talk about it. Our detective is back, but in movie form bringing us a story that starts of course with Tony Shalhoub, because you can't do Monk without Tony Shalhoub, and along with him brings a bunch of his friends from the original series.

Nuestro detective está de vuelta, pero en forma de película trayéndonos una historia que comienza por supuesto con Tony Shalhoub, porque no se puede hacer Monk sin Tony Shalhoub, y junto con él trae a un grupo de sus amigos de la serie original.

I loved all the characters, but mainly Monk because he's still the same man I remembered. He's extremely obsessive-compulsive and that's part of what struck me the first time I watched the series. The story this time takes place after the pandemic, so there are a lot of pandemic jokes that still work. They still work because if you like Monk you know, that in that situation he would have been out of control, completely out of control. I laughed a lot imagining the way he would walk through life, having that worry in his head about the pandemic and how people are dealing with it. It probably would have worked a lot better if it had been released at that time, but I still enjoyed it.

Me encantaron todos los personajes, pero principalmente el de Monk porque sigue siendo el mismo hombre que recordaba. Es extremadamente obsesivo-compulsivo y eso es parte de lo que me llamo la intención la primera vez que vi la serie. La historia esta vez tiene lugar después de la pandemia, así que hay un montón de chistes sobre la pandemia que aún siguen funcionando. Todavía funcionan porque si te gusta Monk ya sabes, que en esa situación habría estado fuera de control, completamente fuera de control. Me reí mucho imaginando la forma en que andaría por la vida, teniendo esa preocupación en su cabeza acerca de la pandemia y cómo la gente está lidiando con ella. There are memorable moments like Monk trying to leave a tip for a delivery man, it's great. We also get an unfortunate accident when he puts his foot on something that to him was worthy of amputating his foot. Randy gets some of his signature moments, including a great scene where he tries to help the case with a LEGO set, and the Randy Disher project makes a not-so-triumphant return. Hector Elizondo returns as Monk's therapist and the two share an impressive scene. Hector is retired from acting, but when he read the story he agreed to return. The scene between Hector and Monk stands out for many reasons, one of which is quite touching. Many scoff when Adrian mentions that he has plans, but after missing a date, something that seems impossible, Dr. Bell realizes the situation. The pair exchange some thoughtful words and once again, a sadness underlies the film, and here is a moment to reflect on their friendship.

Hay momentos memorables como Monk tratando de dejar una propina a un repartidor, es genial. También tenemos un accidente desafortunado cuando pone el pie sobre algo que para él era digno de amputarle el pie. Randy consigue algunos de sus momentos característicos, incluyendo una gran escena en la que intenta ayudar en el caso con un juego de LEGO, y el proyecto Randy Disher hace un regreso no tan triunfal. Héctor Elizondo vuelve como el terapeuta de Monk y ambos comparten una escena impresionante. Héctor está retirado de la actuación, pero cuando leyó la historia aceptó volver. La escena entre Héctor y Monk destaca por muchas razones, una de las cuales es bastante conmovedora. I can't really mention them all, but there are a lot of things added to this movie that make it all work. However, outside of being a bit predictable, they make it all end well. You can't imagine how much I was enjoying it, because seeing the ending and getting to know the character, you really dive deep into who Monk is and who he has been. This applies not only to the characters in that world but also to the fans. So I think the finale is an incredible love letter to the fans of the series and the character. And this is coming from a fan like me who watched all the seasons and was like, WOW, this is amazing, what a spectacular way to end this movie. So I think other fans are going to latch on to that and have a great time not only with the movie but with the ending, which is very satisfying.

Realmente no puedo mencionarlas todas, pero hay un montón de cosas agregadas en esta película que hacen que todo funcione. Sin embargo, fuera de ser un poco predecible, logran que todo termina bien. No pueden imaginar cuanto lo estaba disfrutando, porque viendo el final y conociendo al personaje, te sumerges de lleno en quién es Monk y quién ha sido. Esto no solo aplica a los personajes de ese mundo, sino también para los fans. Así que creo que el final es una increíble carta de amor a los fans de la serie y el personaje. Y esto viene de un fan como yo que vio todas las temporadas y estaba como, WOW, esto es increíble, que forma tan espectacular de terminar esta película. Así que creo que los otros fans se van a enganchar a eso y van a pasar un buen rato no solamente con la película, sino con el final, que es muy satisfactorio.

The soundtrack is also fascinating. Being a feature film, we don't have the traditional intro theme. And with the seriousness of the story, it wouldn't seem to fit. But the film manages to sneak it in very cleverly before surprisingly ending with the original instrumental theme from Jeff Beale's Monk. In a way, it's a great musical ending to the series. However, Randy Newman, the composer and performer of that theme, does appear on screen, and his familiar voice is included in the emotional song "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today."

Overall, the film The Last Case of Monk is an exceptional return of one of the best television shows ever to grace the screen. The more serious and somber storyline is interwoven with crumbs of hope. Its overall positive message of focusing on the good is reinforced by the backdrop of Adrian's friends and family, and a truly excellent final scene. The film manages to give a cinematic feel while maintaining its traditional episodic structure. It ups the ante for its protagonist and creates perhaps the most considerable villain in the series to date.

La banda sonora también es muy interesante. Al tratarse de un largometraje, no tenemos el tradicional tema de introducción. Y con la seriedad de la historia, no parecería encajar. Pero la película se las arregla para colarla de forma muy inteligente antes de terminar sorprendentemente con el tema instrumental original de Monk, de Jeff Beale. En cierto modo, es un gran final musical para la serie. Sin embargo, Randy Newman, el compositor e intérprete de dicho tema, sí aparece en pantalla, y su conocida voz se incluye con la emotiva canción “Creo que hoy va a llover”.

En general, la película El último caso de Monk es un regreso excepcional de uno de los mejores programas de televisión que han pasado por la pantalla. El argumento más serio y sombrío se entrelaza con miguitas de esperanza. Su mensaje positivo general de centrarse en lo bueno se refuerza con el telón de fondo de los amigos y la familia de Adrian, y una escena final realmente excelente. La película consigue dar una sensación cinematográfica al tiempo que mantiene su estructura episódica tradicional. Sube la apuesta de su protagonista y crea al que quizá sea el villano más considerable de la serie hasta la fecha.
