The Secret Door: Unfulfilled Expectations. MOVIE-REVIEW [ENG+ESP]

La Puerta Secreta (The Secret Door), an Australian adventure from Imagen Films Mexico. An adaptation of Tom Hull's book Portable Door, the film tells the story of Paul Carpenter (Patrick_Gibson), who starts an internship in a mysterious London company where the employees are extremely strange. Most peculiar of all, the boss, who has mixed modern corporate practices with magic. Jeffrey Walker is directing and if you don't know him, don't worry, the reason is because this is his first film. Maybe you know his name because he has directed and scripted some episodes of Modern Family.

La Puerta Secreta, una aventura australiana que llega de la mano de Imagen Films México. Siendo una adaptación del libro de Tom Hull de nombre de Portable Door, la película nos cuenta la historia de Paul Carpenter (Patrick_Gibson), quien empieza una pasantía en una misteriosa compañía londinense en la que los empleados son sumamente extraños. El más peculiar de todos, el jefe, quien ha mezclado prácticas corporativas modernas con la magia. La dirección corre a cargo de Jeffrey Walker y si no lo conoces no te preocupes que el motivo es porque esta es su primera película. Tal vez te suene el nombre porque ha dirigido y guionizado algunos episodios de Modern Family.

In the film we are told how the protagonist Paul, who is a person with very bad luck, starts working for a company in which he does not fit at all. At first he had simple tasks of an intern, but the boss assigns him the task of finding something that is hidden in the company, but that no one can see or know of its existence. And so begins Paul's adventure, which will be full of twists and turns with quite interesting themes. Unique characters will appear, the good guys will seem like bad guys and the bad guys will be the good guys who were supposed to help Paul. A whole story full of plot twists and unexpected surprises.

En la película nos cuentan como el protagonista Paul, el cual es una persona con muy mala suerte, comienza a trabajar para una compañía en la cual no encaja para nada. Al principio tenía tareas simples de un pasante, pero el jefe de jefes le asigna la tarea de encontrar algo que hay oculto en la compañía, pero que nadie puede ver ni saber de su existencia. Y así da comienzo la aventura de Paul, la cual estará llena de giros con temas bastante interesantes. Aparecerán personajes únicos, los buenos parecerán malos y los malos serán los buenos que se suponen, ayudaban a Paul. Toda una historia llena de giros argumentales y sorpresas inesperadas.

Within the cast we find very good actors like Christoph Waltz who plays a very good character, but he really reaches a point where he is caricatured and you don't believe him at all. The protagonists are very good, the leading couple is well conceived, they do a very good job, but honestly Christoph Waltz is a great actor, they leave him in a very bad position. And what can we say about Sam Neill who plays his character as he is shown, as a hateful being. But still it strikes me so much that they who are so good actors give the feeling that they are very badly directed. And I don't want to attack the main characters who are not really that well known, but they are very fresh and do their job very well. I mean, they are very good, but honestly they are not honored by those two great stars.

Dentro del elenco encontramos muy buenos actores como Christoph Waltz que hace un muy buen personaje, pero en verdad llega a un punto que es caricaturesco y no se le cree nada. Los protagonistas están muy bien, la pareja protagónica está bien ideada, hacen muy buen su trabajo, pero honestamente Christoph Waltz es un gran actor, lo dejan muy mal parado. Y qué podemos decir de Sam Neill que interpreta su personaje tal cual como nos lo muestran, como un ser odioso. Pero aun así me llama tanto la atención que ellos que son tan buenos actores dan la sensación de que están muy mal dirigidos. Y no quiero atacar a los protagonistas que realmente no son tan conocidos, pero están muy frescos y hacen muy bien su trabajo. O sea, están muy bien, pero honestamente no se les hace honor esas dos grandes estrellas.

But the truth is that the almost two hours of the movie feel a bit slow. The beginning is quite interesting, I must confess, I like the beginning, I like it a lot because you don't know where everything is going. But there are moments when it starts to lose the strength of the story in the film, it starts to become anticlimactic, it becomes totally and absolutely boring. Another point against are the excess of dark scenarios within the film as if they wanted to hide something. We are not talking about a movie that is going to stand out for its very few special effects or CGI, so I do not understand why so much emphasis on dark scenarios.

Pero la verdad hay que reconocer que las casi dos horas de la película se sienten algo lentas. El inicio es bastante interesante, debo de confesar, el inicio me gusta, me gusta mucho porque no sabes hacia dónde va todo. Pero hay momentos en que se empieza a perder la fuerza de la historia en la película, se empieza a volver anticlimática, se vuelve total y absolutamente aburrida. Otro punto en contra son el exceso de escenarios oscuros dentro de la película como si quisiesen ocultar algo. No estamos hablando de una película de vaya a resaltar por sus muy pocos efectos especiales o su CGI, así que no entiendo por qué tanto énfasis en los escenarios oscuros.

In short, I can't tell you that I liked it, in fact, I consider it a forgettable movie and nothing more. I wouldn't recommend it, but I can't tell you not to see it either, since everyone has different tastes and criteria. I can only say that being based on a book, I really expected a lot more from it, especially considering the cast.

En resumen, no les puedo decir que me gustó, de hecho, la considero una película olvidable y nada más. No la recomendaría, pero tampoco puedo decirles que no la vean, ya que todos tienen gustos y criterios diferentes. Solo puede decir que al estar basada en un libro de verdad que esperaba muchísimo más de ella y más teniendo en cuenta el elenco de actores con el que contaba.
