Movie Review: Pretty Woman (1990)

Director: Garry Marshall
Starring: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere

A prostitute and an extremely rich business man falling in love with each other despite their totally different societal status is just so cool. This 1990 classic and American romantic comedy is one of the most beautiful romantic movies that I have ever watched, an all time favourite and which I never get tired of watching again and again. It's got chemistry, irresistible chemistry, heat, the kind of romance that sweeps one of their feet and make a hopeless romantic like me, sweep away every obstacle in the way of love with my magic wand, just like in fairy tales. I always feel lovey-dovey watching this duo give it their best shot.

Summary:
Timeless is this romantic comedy-drama in which beautiful Julia Roberts is enamored by Richard Gere, a man with a suave demeanour. The story set within the glitz of Los Angeles narrates how a very wealthy businessman, Edward Lewis (played by Richard Gere), becomes involved with a spirited prostitute, Vivian Ward (played by Julia Roberts). Packed with humor and heart in a fairy-tale package, the movie is one of my beloved collections.

Plot:
Edward Lewis, who is a cold and calculating corporate raider, is lost in the streets of Los Angeles. He comes across Vivian Ward, a sex worker and they have a business arrangement, in which Edward hires Vivian to be his escort for just one week, but slowly, their relationship develops into a much deeper 'thing'. Vivian's simple charm gradually softens not just Edward's icy facade but also his heart. Edward also introduces Vivian into a world of luxury like she never ever dreamt of.

Performances:
I remember Julia Roberts' sweet smiles, her innocence even as a sex worker, her vulnerability, no wonder the movie earned her Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Richard Gere did not perform less and his suaveness brought so much depth to an otherwise "rich man" character, while the two of them have an on-screen chemistry that leaves one breathless.

Direction and Writing:
Garry Marshall masterfully blends humor and romance with just the right amount of seriousness. The sound track , "Oh, pretty woman by Roy Orbison is really so very cool and it adds 'liveliness'vibe to the movie.

I have very many memorable and wow scenes in this movie, like when Vivian went for shopping, and then Edward gifting Vivian with the diamond necklace to complement her gorgeous red gown down to the crescendo, when Edward like a knight in shining armour climbs to Vivian's window despite being afraid of heights, to rescue the damsel kind of stuff. It is a wonderful movie with topnotch performance from the Duo of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.😍

Me? I would give it a 10/10👍

This review brought back a lot of memories for me, and not just of the movie. I was so young. Two things stood out from the movie, Julia Roberts, who looks gorgeous and the collection of songs that go along with it. Good review, my friend @edith-4angelseu.

Abrazo 🤗.
