It is one of those Friday nights when I'm home alone and in the mood for something eerie and suspenseful, my eyes fell on this movie, the darkened night of my room became tense as before me unfolded, a wonderfully executed suspense-thriller.

"The Mistress" is a 2022 psychological thriller which is centered around a newlywed couple, Parker (John Magaro) and Madeline (Chasten Harmon). As they settle into their lavish new home, a Victorian-era house, in Los Angeles, they stumbled upon a collection of 100-year-old letters from a woman called Rebecca. She was an orphan who had an affair with the man who originally owned the house, William Woodruff, but she committed suicide when she was abandoned by him, with his pregnancy.

Rebecca was William Woodruffs lover and mistress

Meanwhile Parker had earlier on discovered a plate camera with a spent plate in it, having photography as his hobby, he developed the photo in his darkroom, and it revealed a young woman standing right in front of what is now their home.
Soon after, he begins to experience unsettling disturbances as he continues seeing visions and apparitions of Rebecca.

She became The woman in his dreams

Rebecca is now a malevolent spirit who kills anyone she perceives as getting Parker's attention, she becomes extremely possessive of him;

The couple's neighbor, Dawn (Kat Cunning), a multi-talented woman, after a shared kiss with Parker, is found lifeless in the basement.

At the film's climax, the confrontation leaves a thin blurry line between the dead and the living.... The stalker and the stalked....... Illusion and reality!

He promised to be with her for eternity

There's so much more in this story that I can’t quite tell without giving spoilers away.

My review;

"The Mistress" intertwines themes of obsession, guilt, and its lingering impact.

The plot was a bit confusing at first, but the ending explained a lot , honestly I love it when a movie gets me thinking anyways and being able to predict the outcome of a movie makes it so uninteresting for me, as in predicting the ending myself, but it actually turned out to be quite unexpected, now that is real suspense!

The film is well-shot and atmospheric, with a strong cast. The performances by Magaro and Harmon are particularly noteworthy, as they bring a lot of depth and complexity to their characters. The film's ending is also quite unexpected and there's nothing I love as much!
"The Mistress" is a very good thriller, captivating, thought-provoking and I am rating it 🌟🌟🌟🌟 4 Stars out of 5.
