Film Review: The Lessons Learned from “The Two Popes” (2019)/Reseña de Cine: Los aprendizajes de “Los dos papas” (2019)
I don't remember exactly why I didn't go to that event; however, we were dazzled by the message and charisma of Pope John Paul II projected on national television. Beyond talking about a religious topic, he was an exceptional religious figure. Those were my first memories and experiences of the church and learning more about the great Karol.
Until now, we had grown up knowing that John Paul II was the pope, this being possible until his death in 2005. From this moment on, the film begins. After more than 26 years of pontificate, this leader died. The world had forgotten the protocol of an event of such magnitude, in which the Vatican has its traditional procedure until the cardinals elect a new pope.
This is valid in reality or fiction. The question is: Who is the new pope? And the election of Benedict XVI is woven, a very advanced man and a German philosopher cardinal, close to the late Karol. The rest is history...
Administrating the Catholic Church, as presented in the film, is a major commitment for men whose age weighs heavily when you are elected supreme pontiff, being over 75 years old. The demands, dedication and care involved in leading one of the largest churches in the world, requires a lot of human sacrifice in addition to faith.
Needless to say, body and time do not pass in vain and this leads to the events of 2013. Wanting to guide a church within traditional norms is not an easy job and in this sense, the leadership of someone who breaks the mold and is close to Benedict XVI is emerging: the Argentine cardinal Jorge Bergoglio...
It is the debate between brothers of two different positions of the church, where both want to save and get the Catholic Church out of crisis. Traditionalism against modernism, in a world that is so changing in which do they continue the same practices? Or do we adapt to the demands of today's world? And in the middle, the parishioners and the oldest religious structure and one of the most numerous on the planet.
Benedict XVI resigns and once again the conclave has the task of filling the vacancy of the Father of St. Peter's Square. It is there, where (for a long time) a non-Italian pope, a native of America, is elected: Francis. The cardinals had to elect a predecessor from the limits of the end of the world, to save (as a metaphor) the world itself from its own end in terms of faith and religion.
Demonstrating beyond doubt the work of a poor pope, of a poor church, and for the poor, and making the necessary adaptations to adapt the church to the new times and not the other way around...
Since in the end, these characters are as human as you, like me, and with the great difference that their profession of faith and belief commits them even more to contribute to the work of the pastor, much more passionate and mystical, than the role of sheep of the parishioners...

No recuerdo bien porque no fui a ese evento; sin embargo, nos quedamos deslumbrados por el mensaje y carisma del Papa Juan Pablo II proyectados a través de la televisión nacional. Más allá de hablar de un tema religioso, se trataba de un personaje religioso excepcional. Esos fueron mis primeros recuerdos y vivencias sobre la iglesia y conocer más sobre el gran Karol.
Hasta el momento, habíamos crecido sabiendo que Juan Pablo II era el papa, siendo esto posible hasta su muerte en el año 2005. A partir de este momento, arranca la película. Luego de más de 26 años de pontificado, moría este líder. El mundo había olvidado el protocolo de un evento de tal magnitud, en el cual, El Vaticano tiene su tradicional procedimiento hasta que los cardenales eligen a un nuevo papa.
Esto en la realidad o en la ficción es válido. La pregunta es ¿Quién es el nuevo papa? Y se teje la elección de Benedicto XVI, un hombre muy avanzado en años y un cardenal filósofo alemán, cercano al fallecido Karol. El resto es historia…
Administrar la iglesia católica, tal como se plantea en la película, es un compromiso de gran envergadura para hombres cuya edad pesa cuando eres elegido sumo pontífice, teniendo más de 75 años. Lo exigente, lo dedicado y lo cuidadoso de liderar una de las iglesias más grandes del mundo, supone mucho sacrificio humano además de la fe.
Demás está decir que el cuerpo y el tiempo, no pasan en vano y esto deriva en los sucesos del año 2013. Querer orientar una iglesia dentro de las normas tradicionales no es un trabajo fácil y en este sentido, se perfila el liderazgo de alguien que rompe los moldes y es cercano a Benedicto XVI: El cardenal argentino Jorge Bergoglio…
Es el debate entre hermanos de dos posturas diferentes de iglesia, en donde ambas, quieren salvar y sacar de crisis a la iglesia católica. El tradicionalismo en contra del modernismo, en un mundo tan cambiante en el cual ¿O siguen las mismas prácticas? ¿O nos adaptamos a las exigencias del mundo actual? Y en el medio, los feligreses y la estructura religiosa más antigua y una de las más numerosas del planeta.
Benedicto XVI renuncia y de nuevo el cónclave tiene la tarea de llenar la vacante del Padre de la Plaza de San Pedro. Es allí, donde se elige (desde hacía mucho tiempo) a un papa no italiano, nativo de América: Francisco. Tuvieron los cardenales que elegir a un predecesor oriundo desde los límites del fin del mundo, para salvar (A modo de metáfora) al mundo mismo de su mismo fin en cuanto a fe y a la religión.
Demostrando por demás una labor de papa pobre, de iglesia pobre y para los pobres, y haciendo las adaptaciones necesarias para adaptar a la iglesia a los nuevos tiempos y no al revés…
Puesto que al final, estos personajes son tan humanos como ustedes, como yo, y con la gran diferencia que su profesión de fe y creencia, los compromete aún más a contribuir con la labor del pastor, mucho más apasionado y místico, que el rol de oveja de los feligreses…
Hasta la próxima, que Dios bendiga a todas las iglesias del mundo y a todas las religiones; en este momento en el cual, Dios es nuestra guía y Salvación, nuevamente: Dios les bendiga…
