Baba Yaga.jpg

A few nights ago after I had been working flat out on two projects for clients of the company I work for for 12 hours straight, I smiled having been productive and accomplished.

My house mate asked me if I'd like to watch John Wick 4 with him and I said "of course". We had watched the previous one not that long ago. He had just made dinner for us and we sat down, draped blankets over our legs on the couch and settled in for the movie. He and I have a great friendship. We are both pretty easy going people and we understand each other well. We've known each other for over 20 years so I suppose that's to be expected. We never have disagreements, we make each other laugh because we share the same (dark and dry) sense of humour and we have similar taste in music which is nice because I know I'm coming home to good tunes and not bullshit that hurts my ears (or brain). The movie...

The cinematography was spectacular throughout the movie and even though it was violent and rather sad at the end, we joked and laughed together through most of it because of silly little things that we picked up in the screenplay.

I hardly ever sit through a full length movie because I tend to get restless, but that night I wasn't. I felt fully relaxed, at ease and comfortable.

My house mate works really hard at his job. Many people depend on him to make sure that things work seamlessly and effectively. He's the first one they phone as the problem solver when things go wrong. It's taken him many years to gain all the knowledge he has in his industry and decades of experience and he's well respected in his role as a result. So when he comes home and wants to detach from the work day watching series or movies, he always invites me and occasionally when my work is also finished and I can take the time, I do.

It's not difficult to work together at having a pleasant atmosphere in a shared living space. It just takes some commitment, respect and decency. Some common interests help too.

As for the movie, I enjoyed it but I felt that the end was a bit...unfinished, a bit like a Stephen King novel where he had lost interest.

Towards the end of the movie, I sat bolt upright and stared at the screen, slightly squinting while trying to locate a file in my brain. My housemate says to me "You alright?"

"Yes... but....Is that the guy that played The Kurgan in Highlander?"

"My word woman, that's a long time ago, how on earth did you recognise him?"

"I have no idea. His demeanour probably"

"Amazing. You're always saying your memory is failing but it seems perfectly good to me" He said with a slight chuckle.

"I can't remember what we ate for dinner three nights ago, but faces, I remember them. Voices too."

I broke out snacks and decided to put that familiar face out of my mind for later. This morning I looked up Clancy Brown and can't understand how I recognized him, he was so young in Highlander and it was such a different type of role from this one. It's nice to surprise myself every once in a while with my recall.

Not sure when I'll be able to have another movie night, but any suggestions/recommendations of good ones are welcome in the comments.

Yes, I also recognized Bill Skarsgård, but from Hemlock Grove. He wasn't too bad in this, I like that he's grown up a little bit. I enjoyed watching him get shot 🤣

I actually enjoyed the movie. The first John Wick will always be the best, 2 was mehh and the third movie was mostly annoying.

So, compared to the last 2 movies, 4 was amazing in many ways. A bit of mindless action, many picturesque scenes, friendship and mutual respect, rivalry between the best of the best in the franchise, and at last, freedom!
