Movie Review: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos! Espero que se encuentren muy bien. Estoy contenta porque ya pude ver la película Balada de pájaros cantores y serpientes y hoy les compartiré mi opinión.

Hello friends! I hope you are feeling great. I am happy because I was able to watch the movie The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and today I will share with you my opinion.

Los juegos del hambre fue la primera trilogía que leí en mi vida, la que me hizo un click y me impulsó a seguir en este maravilloso mundo de la lectura. No fueron mis primeros libros, pero sí les tengo un cariño especial y estoy en posición de decir que marcaron un antes y un después en mi vida, tanto los libros como las películas. Por desgracia todavía no pude leer esta precuela, pero sí vi la película recientemente. Así que acá les dejo mi reseña.

The Hunger Games was the first trilogy I read in my life, the one that made me click and pushed me to continue in this wonderful world of reading. They were not my first books, but I do have a special affection for them and I am in a position to say that they marked a before and after in my life, both the books and the movies. Unfortunately I was not able to read this prequel yet, but I did see the movie recently. So here is my review.

Antes de convertirse en el presidente de Panem, Coriolanus Snow era un joven soñador que se esforzaba por volver a tener una buena posición socioeconómica junto a la única familia que le quedó postguerra, su prima Tigris y su abuela. Para ello deberá convertirse en mentor de uno de los tributos de Los juegos del hambre y llevarlo a la victoria. Su tributo resulta ser Lucy Gray Baird del distrito 12, el más pobre de todos. Ella es una joven cantora que se verá envuelta en el peor escenario posible, pero junto a Coriolanus y su lucha por alcanzar su objetivo tendrá una oportunidad de salir victoriosa. Sin embargo, el precio a pagar les será doloroso.

Before becoming the president of Panem, Coriolanus Snow was a young dreamer striving to regain a good socioeconomic position with his only remaining post-war family, his cousin Tigris and his grandmother. To do so, he must become a mentor to one of the tributes in The Hunger Games and lead him to victory. His tribute turns out to be Lucy Gray Baird from District 12, the poorest of all. She is a young singer who will be caught up in the worst possible scenario, but together with Coriolanus and her struggle to reach her goal she will have a chance to emerge victorious. However, the price to pay will be painful.

No sé porque me tardé tanto en ver esta película, ingresar de nuevo en los escenarios de Los juegos del hambre, la ambientación, la música, todo me produjo mucha nostalgia de aquellos años siendo fan.

I don't know why it took me so long to see this movie, entering again in the scenarios of The Hunger Games, the setting, the music, everything made me very nostalgic of those years being a fan.

Me gustó el personaje de Coriolanus Snow, en la trilogía principal se hace odiar, pero también se le tiene cierto aprecio y da ese aire de quién se quedó solo tras entregar su vida a un propósito mayor que lo segó de lo importante. Uno elige su destino y Snow eligió el suyo tras varios escenarios posibles. Me alegre de ver que este personaje conservó la esencia del viejo. Podía imaginarlo perfectamente así de joven, tiene muchas características en común. También me molestó su actuar hacía el final y como parecía tener una meta que alcanzó pero a un alto precio.

I liked the character of Coriolanus Snow, in the main trilogy he is made to be hated, but he is also held in some appreciation and gives that air of who was left alone after giving his life to a greater purpose that mowed him down from what is important. You choose your destiny and Snow chose his after several possible scenarios. I was glad to see that this character retained the essence of the old man. I could picture him perfectly well like that as a young man, he has many characteristics in common. I was also bothered by his actions towards the end and how he seemed to have a goal that he achieved but at a high price.

El personaje de Lucy me gustó, no me hizo acordar para nada a Katniss ya que ella era una luchadora y superviviente nata. No sé si Lucy hubiera logrado sobrevivir por sus propios medios, ni mucho menos si hubiera sido capaz de matar a alguien intencionalmente. De todos modos, agradezco que no se parezcan en eso, aunque sí pude ver cierto espíritu rebelde similar y la manera en que dio un buen espectáculo en general.

I liked Lucy's character, she didn't remind me of Katniss at all since she was a born fighter and survivor. I don't know if Lucy would have managed to survive on her own, let alone if she would have been able to intentionally kill someone. Anyway, I appreciated that they weren't alike in that, though I could see a certain similar rebellious spirit and the way she put on a good show overall.

Es una película que logró captar mi atención de inmediato y mantenerla a lo largo de las 2 horas y media de duración. No les voy a mentir, fue bastante larga y se que a veces da pereza esa cantidad de tiempo estando sentados, pero les juro que se me pasó muy rápido. Creo que ayuda que esté separada como si fueran actos de una obra de teatro con cada etapa a destacar. Me gustó mucho eso, ya que la película se enfoca en varios escenarios y se desarrolla mucho más allá de lo que pasó en los juegos propiamente dichos.

It's a movie that managed to capture my attention immediately and keep it throughout the 2 and a half hours of duration. I'm not going to lie, it was quite long and I know that sometimes it's lazy to sit through it for that amount of time, but I swear it went by very quickly. I think it helps that it is separated as if they were acts of a play with each stage to highlight. I really liked that, as the movie focuses on several scenarios and takes place far beyond what happened in the games themselves.

Todavía me sigue sorprendiendo la frialdad del capitolio ante los asesinatos televisivos, como encuentran regocijo en la masacre, y como se intenta acallar la fortaleza de aquellos que se rebelan contra el sistema para que los espectadores no empiecen a empatizar con ellos y comiencen a cuestionarse las cosas. Dan vuelta todo y manipulan la transmisión a su antojo y beneficio. Creo que es algo con lo que se puede uno identificar en la vida real, la política y el papel que juegan los medios de comunicación. Pero bueno, ese es otro tema.

I am still amazed by the coldness of the capitol in the face of the televised murders, how they find joy in the massacre, and how they try to silence the strength of those who rebel against the system so that viewers do not begin to empathize with them and begin to question things. They turn everything around and manipulate the broadcast to their whim and benefit. I think this is something you can identify with in real life, politics and the role played by the media. But well, that's another topic.

En definitiva, me encantó ver esta película, me dio mucha nostalgia y ganas de sumergirme en este mundo distópico de nuevo. Estoy ansiando leer el libro que seguro tendrá más detalles de esta historia. Si querés verla y todavía no lo hiciste o no viste Los juegos del hambre, igual puedes ver esta única película, ya que es independiente. Nada más es para profundizar en este personaje tan emblemático. La disfruté mucho.

All in all, I loved watching this movie, it made me very nostalgic and eager to dive into this dystopian world again. I can't wait to read the book that will surely have more details of this story. If you want to see it and you haven't yet or you haven't seen The Hunger Games, you can still watch this one movie, as it is standalone. Nothing else is to delve deeper into this iconic character. I enjoyed it a lot.
