Escalating! Evil Dead Rise (2023) || Movie Review.
This movie has been on my TV for a while now and I have been reluctant to watch, why? I can't explain. Today, since I was at home, I decided to spice up my day with some horror/ paranormal movie. I had to choose between 'Smile' and 'Evil Dead Rise'. So I went for Evil Dead Rise instead. I baked some strawberry flavored cupcakes to munch on while I watched the movie and let me tell you, I couldn't finish the cupcakes. My appetite was gone immediately after the opening scenes of the movie.
This movie is a perfect allegory about sensitivity and discernment. As a human, we're all built with natural instinct and discernment which usually transmits from our pineal gland (the third eye) as many people refer it to. It is left for us to actually now make use of it when it is required and necessary. A small mistake or misdeed can spread havoc and carnage that we least expect. Also this movie perfectly conveys this quote that says, "curiosity killed the cat".
Evil Dead Rise (2023) was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, written and directed by Lee Cronin. It is an American supernatural horror movie that was produced by Rob Tapert with characters created by Sam Raimi. Evil Dead Rise is the fifth installment of the Evil Dead franchise. It starred Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher (her first debut film), and Jayden Daniel's with other supporting characters.
The opening scene of this movie got me yelling because I didn't expect it to be brutal from the beginning. I thought it was going to start slowly to build up the background story, but the unexpected happened, and immediately I ditched the delicious strawberry flavored cupcakes I had baked earlier and prepared myself that this movie would be a bloodbath.
This movie revolves around Beth (Lily Sullivan) who went to visit her estranged sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her three children (Danny and Bridget, and Kassie) with the intention of telling her sister she was pregnant. As she got to her sister she discovered her sister's husband had already left them. So she kept her newly developed problems to herself to instead bond with her sister and help her.
Beth's visit was cut short when a minor earthquake happened while Danny, Bridget, and Kassie were out to get pizza. When the earthquake passed, the children discovered a sink in the apartment building which exposed a hidden bank vault. Upon discovery, Silly Danny allowed his curiosity to take over him.
He went into the sinkhole and uncovered phonograph records along with religious documents with an unusual book. Taking the phonograph records and the unusual book with him they went back to their apartment. Ellie was already panicking whether her kids were alright. Seeing them come back made her happy. Things took the wrong turn after that. Will they come out of it alive?
My Review And Rating.
The setting of this movie was amazing. It takes the concept of 'The Cabin In The Woods' from the previous Evil Dead films and moves to an inner city (an apartment), thereby giving us something fresh and new to watch. It achieved the same isolation from the previous Evil Dead films but with a different flair to it. I love the setting of this installment because it was nostalgic in a way and also new in a way.
Talking about if this installment actually delivered, yes it delivered in a good way. The movie intensely conveyed horrific scenes making it a brutal gore movie, but I will make it clear that this installment is no way brutal as the installment of 2013, in my opinion. The gore scenes were all shot well, excellent CGI, and there was no holding back from the actors during their gore scenes.
The Cast performed amazingly well. They all handle their role well. My favorites were Ellie and Kassie. Ellie made the movie a little fun and enjoyable. I think she stole the spotlight all through the movie. One could see that she was having fun while playing her role. Kassie's was amazing for her age and for the fact that this was her film debut. She performed like a child of her age.
The most annoying characters for me were Danny and Beth. They both were messing around alot and being silly all through the movie. Danny was much more annoyed for me that I felt like he should be disciplined 😒. Apart from that, this has a good cast.
The location was deserving and excellent for the setting of the movie. Scene arrangements were amazing and it made the movie very engaging to the viewers. The storyline wasn't well written but it was nostalgic and new. The script was also not very interesting for me, especially the dialogues. The only fault I found in the storyline was the behaviors of the characters, it was unrealistic for me. They were slow in thinking, they waited until danger came to them, no natural protective instinct. It was like they were admiring danger before it came to them.
If you are a fan of the Evil Dead Franchise, you will definitely enjoy this. Rating this movie, I will give it 4 out of 5 stars. It was entertaining, enjoyable, horrific and bloody, just that I couldn't eat my cupcakes and also watch the movie. It was upsetting. If you have a faint heart and you are easily triggered, do not watch this movie. Also, I couldn't help but wonder if therapy session fees are paid for the children because they will need it.

Thank you for visiting and supporting my blog 🤗
Anyone that has watched an Evil Dead movie knows that it's not a good idea to eat while seeing the movies😆. I remember that the last Evil Dead from 2013 was really good. I did not plan to see that film but it ended up being a pleasant surprise that kept me hooked from beginning until the end. I expect the same from this film or even more. From your review, I can tell that the movie was up to your taste.
Hahah, honestly I had forgotten. I thought I have something to munch on, you know. The 2013 installment is my favorite. Yes the movie was enjoyable for me. Thank you for the visit and comment. I appreciate it. Have a nice day.
I really liked this one, it managed to get the perfect balance between the classic trilogy and the more series tone of the 2013 remake.
Exactly! I agree with you. I thought after the long break in between the installments, there won't be a balance. But they did it anyways, in a new way. Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it. Have a nice day.
I love zombie movies, they are fun to watch
Yeah. Danny should have been disciplined. 😂
He basically caused everything.
I really enjoyed watching the movie though I haven't watched the previous installments (I am always carried away) but I'll make sure I do soon.
I enjoyed your review.
No doubt. He was naughty.
You should watch the previous installment. You would enjoy them. Thank you for reading and commenting. I appreciate it😊
I'd have to watch them during the day.
You're welcome. 🤗
