The Fantastic World Of Portuguese Sardines

sardine shop 9.jpg

This was one of the most surprising and unexpected shops I saw during my recent walks around Lisbon. I was in that spot a few times before, and I have not seen it there. Now I am not sure if it is rather new or if I was just so not paying attention to anything :D

It is so colorful and so unreal that it looks like it was taken from one of Tim Burton's movies.

With all the fun decorations, ponies, oversized chairs you can take photos on, and dozens of little lamps... you just feel like a kid in a candy store.
But there are no candies... only FISH! 🤣

It's quite a brilliant idea, if you ask me. Not exactly what I would think of when someone tells me to go get a can of tuna, but it works :)

Stands, shelves, baskets, piles, and piles of tins.
Tins everywhere!!

The shop was filled with tourists. Many were just looking, but it is hard to resist getting at least one tin (I got none, though). Many had cartoon images, Portuguese cities, or dates. The one with dates also had the names of famous people born that year, so you could see who is the same age as you.

Decisions, decisions...

The cheapest ones were probably around 7 euros, if I remember right, which is still a lot compared to the regular price in a supermarket of around 1.5 euros per small tin. Other types of seafood were even more expensive!
So it looks like it's more like a fun souvenir than something to buy and eat. Now I wonder if people do eat it or just keep it.

A fairy tale mixed with a circus and Coca-Cola style adds top to bottom :)

And if that is still not enough, you can pick up a nice comic theme set...

...or a sardine gold bar.

If you even visit Lisbon and want to check it out (and I think it is worth it), it is right here:

I remembered my parents with your publication, they were a big fan of grilled sardines, the best.

I loved your photos, they are all great, full of color, Lisbon always has beautiful things that surprise us.

Thank you for showing me a little piece of the land of my parents, I still have very beautiful memories of it, especially the museums and its typical streets that were not asphalt but stone ...

avatar

Sardines in general are very popular here. I didn't know your parents are from here. Not surprised they loved sardines :)
It was my please, glad you enjoyed the visit.

By the way... I hate those stones. They are extremely slippery when wet! And almost all pavement are covered in them.

I'm a pacifisht, but this place offishially struck a nerve 😆 I think it's really cool (except for the expensive prices) but yet so weird. We have Tony's chocolate stores here which are pretty much the same, colorful, well organized, sofishticated...but with chocolate. I mean it's worth a visit but so weird. Like orange juice and toothpaste :D

avatar

pacifisht
sofishticated

😂

At least you have chocolate! That is more fitting to the theme and that is something I would expect... but fish? :p

avatar

@ewkaw These cans of sardines are pretty. It would almost hurt my heart to open them because they are so pretty. Collection box!!

avatar

That's why I wonder if people do open them, or just keep as souvenir. If the fish is actually good there :p

avatar

The fish is good, a friend told me about it some time ago. My friend keeps it as decoration. But be careful if it ferments. If you don't know Surströmming fermented fish. The can is rounded so it ferments so she knows it's safe to eat. Be careful when you open it, it squirts. I cried laughing while watching the video. I admit that you have never eaten it but I would be tempted by the experience. Be careful, the video is difficult to watch. There are apparently fans of this type of meal. In the first video, the woman is much braver than the two men in the second video. Good luck for the session lol

It is so colorful and so unreal that it looks like it was taken from one of Tim Burton's movies.

The colors and design are very beautiful. It really looks like a still from a movie. It looks like the candy and games store in the Harry Potter movie. I'm sure it was very enjoyable to visit.

avatar

Yeaaa like a movie. I really liked it and it could be even bigger!

avatar

What a unique location... Never saw such shops for selling fish...

avatar

It is pretty cool and very catchy :)
I still would like to see candies there :p

avatar

Candy shops are always vibrant and colorful. Will be nice if they add some candies there as well...

avatar

Oh, it is like the one in Porto that we visited :)) Sooooo many colourful sardine tins. 🤓

avatar

They spread! :D
I couldn't stop looking at all of them. Did you get any?

avatar

Nope, we were more focused on getting some wine and cod fish in the next shop lol 😂🥂

avatar

Haha good decision :D

this is a great find dear friend @ewkaw I don't think there is another place like it in the world
What a particular and unique business, a true genius.
Beautiful and colorful photographs, thank you very much for letting us know about the existence of this business format
Have a great night and a happy rest

avatar

I am sure there is many fun shops like that. They just have to be found :)
It was a great idea indeed.
Thanks, have a nice day!

avatar

Sardines here probably are cheaper compared to those in stores ☺️

avatar

I am sure they are! This shop is just very special :)

avatar

I didn't know canned sardines age like wine. I'd be quite reluctant to try eating a fish canned in 1918 or similar date visible on your photos 😉

avatar

It's a specialty. Like those rotten herrings ;)

avatar

OH MY GOD MY DREAM!!!!! Do they do tastings? A sardine flight?

avatar

Haha.. I didnt see any testing which is a pity. But I can imagine how the show would smell :p

avatar

It would smell fantastic, what are you talking about?? 😂

I used to go saltwater fishing a lot. I also used to forget and leave my frozen sardine bait in the trunk of my car afterwards and not remember until two days later when it started to rot. It doesn't smell anything like what you would imagine a rotting sardine would smell like. More like ten thousand pairs of unwashed dentures.

And still I love me some sardines in a can.

avatar

Wow, this looks just like what we see in movies, it's so colorful and beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us.

avatar

It does, doesn't it? :D
Thank you!

avatar

!! This recalls me a similar place I saw in Vienne, it´s a store of a famous sardine brand as well, i found it so curious, a store only for that. But this is in another level, it´s a whole museum.

avatar

What a fun shop. Sardines galore. Presently in such a fun way but it does come at a cost. I love that they created such a shop for sardines. It is a creative idea. I am sure they attract many visitors and some of them will buy the sardines for the cans.

Hi, I like the post, of course, but there is something unrelated I would like to ask.
Is there any chance that you and others I offended back then in the black and white community ... 2021? 2020? ... unmute me? I'm sorry. I feel bad about it, you and achoo are obviously nice people ... so, yeah ... I'm sorry.

avatar

Hi and thanks. But as far as I remember the main argument was between you and @brumest and he is the right person to talk to and/or apologize. The Black and White community is his and he is the main person behind it. Not me or @ackhoo.

avatar

Thank you 🙂 I didn't know who was I talking with and that made being offensive so easy. I'll contact him.

avatar
(Edited)

But ... I forgot ... can you give me some clue about how can I contact him? I don't see any recent post he made to comment like I did with you.

avatar

You can catch him either on Discord or on any of the Monochromes posts.

avatar
(Edited)

Ok, thanks. I tried both ways. I mean, I sent messages both ways ... is not that I tried and didn't work or something 🙂
