Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - A Philosophical Masterpiece
Hello, anime world, it's a beautiful day for us to reflect on the psychological part of our lives. What are the philosophies we follow, and how does anime come into that view? Many people watch anime for the romance story, the fight scenes, the comedy, and many other things. Yes, this is one of the reasons I watch anime, but do you know there are anime that contain all this yet with a strong philosophical theme, if we can think deeply? The words said by the character, their ideology, and their view of humanity and the world.
Today, I bring one of that kind of anime to the table for us to discuss and learn from it. The name of this anime is "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," and we will be discussing some of the things viewers might have missed during the show.
I remember the first day I watched this anime; it was sent to me by a friend who was also an otaku. While watching it, I realized it wasn't like the other kinds of anime I have watched; it has a deeper meaning, just like "DeathNote, Monster, and the like". Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a thought-provoking anime series that explores complex themes, moral dilemmas, and the human condition. It is safe to say the series is a masterpiece of storytelling, character development, and emotional resonance.
You see, at its core, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a series about the pursuit of knowledge, just like every other human on earth is doing, the consequences of playing God, and the importance of human relationships.
The story follows the journey of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse, as they search for the Philosopher's Stone to restore their bodies after a failed attempt to bring their mother back to life using alchemy. The philosopher's stone is not a stone you just find lying around in a forest or a mystical dungeon, or a particular tribe in the anime owns it. The philosopher's stone is created, and the method of creating one is something that wouldn't sit well with you, even though the show is an anime.
Fullmetal Alchemist explores various religious themes, which are reminiscent of the biblical idea of sacrifice and redemption. The show also touches on the idea of a universal equivalent exchange, where every gain comes with a corresponding loss. The show broadens your mind on how the universe works, which can even make you start questioning the concept of the universe. I love this anime because you learn from every episode, the bond between brothers who are ready to do anything to get what they want, and the actions of some characters who want to prove they are right.
Many people have this belief that it is impossible to dislike anime characters because they are fictional but Fullmetal Alchemist will prove you wrong. Some characters in the series are truly despicable, and their actions are haunting. For example, Shou Tucker, the Binding Alchemist, is a chilling example of a character who prioritizes scientific progress over human life and dignity.
I still don't understand how a father will take his own little daughter and experiment on her. He fused his daughter and her dog together just to prove he was able to, and this part of the episode doesn't sit well with many viewers. The fact that he saw nothing wrong with it was very disturbing.
The storyline of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is about how two brothers who went to extreme ends to recover their bodies after trying to perform alchemy to bring back their mother, but things didn't turn out the way they wanted. During their journey, they discover the true depth of the things they have done and how disturbing some people did it. The series is engaging, complex, and emotionally resonant.
One of the most significant lessons I learned from this series is the importance of understanding the consequences of our actions. The Elric brothers' journey serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of playing God and the importance of respecting the natural order of things.
The series also highlights the value of human relationships, friendship, and sacrifice. The bond between Edward and Alphonse is a testament to the power of brotherly love and the lengths to which people will go to protect and care for one another.
This is an old anime, and I expect all anime fans should have watched it, but if you haven't seen it, this is the best time for you to watch another masterpiece so you can brag to your friends about it. Also, rewatching it isn't a bad idea. The series is a 10/10 because of the various aspect of life it covers.
If you are going to watch it, then get ready to have your mind blown away.

You're absolutely right. This series is much more than a fighting and adventure anime; it's a true masterpiece. I completely agree with you that it makes you think a lot. From the beginning, it captivates you with the story of the Elric brothers, their quest, and the whole alchemy and equivalent exchange thing. That concept is amazing; how it makes you reflect on the consequences of every action, on what you gain and what you lose. It touches on universal themes: family, sacrifice, ambition, redemption, the pursuit of knowledge... That's why it's so well-rounded, and why I give it a 10/10 without hesitation, just like you.

The Shou Tucker thing is the most despicable thing I saw in an anime and it's still a cinematic trauma.
Overall, FMA is a very deep series as you say. They present a lot of moral dilemmas.

I watched this anime for the first time a few months ago and was quite fascinated. What many people were saying about this work and how perfect it was was true. Both its story and its characters, its beginning and its end are the best for a dark fantasy and action series like this. But what's most striking are the profound lessons one learns from it. It's one of the best things I've ever seen, to be honest. It is a masterpiece.
