Review of Porco Rosso (esp/eng)

Porco es un cerdo aviador que se enfrenta a los piratas aéreos del Adriático, logrando frustrar sus planes en cada ocasión. Buscando una forma de deshacerse de Porco, los piratas contratan a un aventurero americano para que se encargue.

Esta película es otra creación del mundialmente famoso Hayao Miyazaki, estrenada en 1992, fue muy distinta a lo que Miyazaki había mostrado hasta ese momento. Es de esas historias que no se pueden explicar fácilmente, hay que verla y decidir si se ama u odia este filme.

La música fue compuesta por el mismo compositor de la banda sonora de Nausicaa Del Valle Del Viento, logrando crear una partitura que da forma al espíritu del Mediterráneo que rodea a toda la cinta, alcanzando un equilibrar entre las escenas de acción con mucha adrenalina y otras mucho más calmadas que transmiten romance.

La animación es increíble, transportándonos a esa época en la que pilotar un avión estaba rodeado de romanticismo el cual es el mismo que Miyazaki siente por la aviación. Esto ya se había notado en Nausicaa y El Castillo En El Cielo, pero aquí pudo explorar y volcarse en todo lo que le gusta de la aviación, esa pasión se transmite al espectador en la gran cantidad de instantes en dónde se enfoca a un avión recorriendo el cielo, algo que siempre me ha impresionado de esta producción.

Los escenarios naturales y los construidos por personas mostrados en esta cinta están muy bien detallados, el mar, las islas, el océano, los diseños de personajes, toda esa combinación de detalles es lo que hace tan llamativo a este filme.

Su trama combina el humor sencillo con el ya mencionado romanticismo, no solo amor romántico sino también el amor que se siente hacia el pasado, el argumento no se vuelve aburrido y la dirección es genial.

Logrando superar la animación de otras cintas estrenadas el mismo año, sabiendo como equilibrar las escenas de duelos de aviones y luego pasando a momentos donde los personajes solo hablan permitiéndonos conocerlos mejor.

Todo lo mencionado muestra a una película que con todas las emociones mostradas fácilmente nos hace reír o conocernos rápidamente cuando menos lo esperamos, con personajes entrañables como lo son Porco, Fiona, Piccolo, Gina, Curtis o los dementes piratas Mammaiuto, logran entretenernos tanto como unos actores de carne y hueso. Con esta película se demuestra una vez más que la animación no es solo para niños y que puede traernos historias tan maravillosas como está, no es un género de películas, sino una herramienta que puede crear cintas asombrosas.

Está producción se hizo tan bien que hoy día sigue atrayendo nuevos fans, siendo una de las obras más maduras y personales de Miyazaki, crítica la decadencia de los ideales y al pragmatismo de la sociedad, todo transmitido en una trama sencilla que nunca se vuelve aburrida.

Situándose en una época previa a la guerra logra encontrar espacio para la fantasía y la aventura, con mensajes reflexivos, dónde hay varios matices, una cinta imperdible para cualquier fan de Miyazaki.

Porco is an aviator pig who takes on the Adriatic air pirates, managing to foil their plans each time. Looking for a way to get rid of Porco, the pirates hire an American adventurer to take charge.

This film is another creation of the world famous Hayao Miyazaki, released in 1992, was very different from what Miyazaki had shown up to that point. It is one of those stories that cannot be easily explained, you have to watch it and decide whether you love or hate this film.

The music was composed by the same composer of the soundtrack of Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, managing to create a score that gives shape to the spirit of the Mediterranean that surrounds the entire film, achieving a balance between the action scenes with lots of adrenaline and other much calmer scenes that convey romance.

The animation is incredible, transporting us back to a time when flying an airplane was surrounded by the same romanticism that Miyazaki feels for aviation. This had already been noticed in Nausicaa and The Castle in the Sky, but here he was able to explore and turn to everything he loves about aviation, that passion is transmitted to the viewer in the large number of moments where it focuses on a plane flying through the sky, something that has always impressed me about this production.

The natural and human-made scenery shown in this film is very well detailed, the sea, the islands, the ocean, the character designs, all that combination of details is what makes this film so striking.

Its plot combines simple humor with the aforementioned romanticism, not only romantic love but also the love felt towards the past, the plot does not get boring and the direction is great.

It manages to surpass the animation of other films released in the same year, knowing how to balance the scenes of airplane duels and then moving on to moments where the characters only talk, allowing us to get to know them better.

All of the above shows a film that with all the emotions shown easily makes us laugh or get to know them quickly when we least expect it, with endearing characters such as Porco, Fiona, Piccolo, Gina, Curtis or the demented pirates Mammaiuto, they manage to entertain us as much as some flesh and blood actors. This film proves once again that animation is not only for children and that it can bring us stories as wonderful as this one, it is not a film genre, but a tool that can create amazing films.

This production did so well that today it continues to attract new fans, being one of Miyazaki's most mature and personal works, criticizing the decadence of ideals and the pragmatism of society, all conveyed in a simple plot that never becomes boring.

Set in a pre-war era, it manages to find space for fantasy and adventure, with reflective messages, where there are several nuances, a must-see film for any Miyazaki fan.
