My opinion about the series "Horizon. An American Saga. Chapter 1"

The film failed to convince me, I must admit.

It doesn't bring any great innovations to the western genre, nor does it stand out for its originality or daring, something difficult considering the great names that have cultivated it.

The stories it explores are not unfamiliar, though that does not mean they are without value.

In fact, this familiarity with themes, settings and characters known to those who appreciate the genre is one of its strengths.

The film, which is made with an awareness of its essence, doesn't resort to technical showboating, either in the narrative or in the framing, and is restrained in this respect.

Although the dialogue does not always succeed in fully explaining the actions and feelings, it includes valuable reflections.

These kinds of moral and political approaches typical of westerns seem to be relegated to the present day, and this is also evident in the characterisation of some of the characters.

There are obvious references to classic films of the genre.

A clear reference can be made between Costner's character's pursuers and the Hannasseys, a recognisable family of western outlaws.

Likewise, the group of scalp hunters is very reminiscent of the fearsome gang in "Blood Meridian".

On the other hand, the cavalry-centred scenes embody a familiar blend of military and domestic life, and even certain flashes of humour and humanity in the veteran sergeant, the girl and the soldiers are reminiscent of classic western approaches.

All in all, one can conclude that this is a very decent film, respectful of the fundamentals of the genre but offering nothing new.

In fact, the audience for this film has been very bad and the criticisms have led to the cancellation of the screening of the second chapter of the film, which was already recorded in its entirety.
