NAPOLEON (2023) Mi Opinión [ENG-ESP]

Today I went to the cinema to see Napoleon, Riddley Scott's latest installment starring the great Joaquin Phoenix. I hadn't gone to the cinema for a long time, so I didn't miss the opportunity to see a period film about a character who marked the history of the world. I have been an admirer of the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte, of how a man who came from nothing could achieve such greatness, without a doubt that his life is full of everything, amazing victories and terrifying defeats and I believe that therein lies one of the first shortcomings of this movie, I will briefly explain my opinion, without referring to specific details so as not to reveal any type of Spoiler.

Hoy fui al cine a ver Napoleón, la última entrega de Riddley Scott protagonizada por el gran Joaquín Phoenix, tenía mucho tiempo sin ir al cine, así que no dejé pasar la oportunidad para ver una película de época sobre un personaje que marcó la historia del mundo. He sido admirador de la figura de Napoleón Bonaparte, de como un hombre salido de la nada pudo lograr tal grandeza, sin duda que su vida está llena de todo, victorias asombrosas y espantosas derrotas y creo que ahí esta unas de las primeras falencias de esta película, explicaré brevemente mi opinión, sin referirme a detalles específicos para no revelar ningún tipo de Spoiler.

I will start first with the character, Napoleon Bonaparte is a man who has completely filled story books, his life was very complex and it is something that I do not see reflected within the story of the film, the cut of the cinema was very broad, more than two hours and yet only a few events were briefly discussed. Realizing this mutilation, I understood that to be truly satisfied with Bonaparte's life, I would need a good series. I mention, for example, the fact that nowhere has the invasion of Spain been mentioned, this event meant the fracture of the Spanish empire and that forever changed half of the world at that time, there was not a single mention and in one war movie this point could not be missed.

Comenzaré en primer lugar con el personaje, Napoleón Bonaparte es un hombre que ha llenado libros de historias por completo, su vida fue muy compleja y es algo que dentro de la historia de la película no veo reflejado, el corte del cine fue muy amplio, más de dos horas y sin embargo solo pocos acontecimientos fueron tratados someramente. Al percatarme de esa mutilación entendí que para estar satisfecho realmente sobre la vida de Bonaparte, necesitaría una buena serie. Menciono, por el ejemplo, el hecho de que por ningún lado se haya mencionado la invasión a España, dicho acontecimiento significó la fractura del imperio español y que cambió para siempre la mitad del mundo de aquella época, no hubo una sola mención y en una película de guerra este punto no podía faltar.

Joaquin Phoenix is ​​a great actor and here I feel that he did what was in his script, but as far as I am concerned I did not see the personality of one of the military geniuses of universal history reflected, his characterization seems to have another direction, and such Perhaps that is what the director wanted, but I have read many books about Napoleon, especially some comments by biographer Stefan Zweig in which he glimpses what this man was, I think the writing of the script was very poor and too many creative licenses were taken. that made Phoenix's character just a filler character.

What I think is the common thread in the film is the toxic relationship between Napoleon and Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby, her character I feel is a little more realistic, and this makes me understand that perhaps director Scott's idea was propose what the romance of the most powerful man in Europe was like at the beginning of the 19th century. His interpretation was wonderful, and he makes Napoleon look like a man who is emotionally codependent on his figure, and in the same way on his mother, someone who, due to her ambition for power, is difficult for me to understand. I have seen other films where they take a historical figure and put them in a different context, or focus on a single important aspect of their life, such as Adolf Hitler in Der Untergang from 2004, where they focused on the last days of the German dictator, and it was perfect. If that had been the case with this Napoleon film, I would have liked it very much.

Lo que pienso que es el hilo conductor en la película es la relación tóxica entre Napoleón y Josefina, interpretada por Vanessa Kirby, su personaje si lo siento un poco más realista, y esto me da a entender que tal vez la idea del director Scott era plantear como fue el romance del hombre más poderoso de Europa a inicios del siglo XIX. Su interpretación fue maravillosa, y hace quedar a Napoleón como un hombre co-dependiente emocional de su figura, y de la misma forma por su madre, alguien que por su ambición de poder me cuesta mucho trabajo entender. He visto otras películas donde toman a un personaje histórico y lo ponen en un contexto diferente, o se centran en un solo aspecto importante de su vida, como por ejemplo Adolf Hitler en Der Untergang del año 2004, donde se centraron en los últimos días del dictador alemán, y quedó perfecto. Si así hubiera sido el caso de esta película de Napoleón, me habría agradado muchísimo.

But it's not all bad, it has many good things and I especially want to mention the costumes, I like period films, and the immense work carried out to recreate uniforms, flags and clothing of the time was something impressive, that's something I like. I made it feel like I was seeing the whole spirit of the French revolution and its consequences. The staging and photography undoubtedly make it a production worthy of the big screen. Another point in its favor are the war recreations, the battles shown I think are well choreographed, before in Gladiator, Riddley Scott showed us General Máximo Decimus Meridio fighting the fierce barbarians of northern Europe with his legions, and here He certainly shows off his genius to recreate good battles that undoubtedly look impressive on the big screen.

Pero no todo es malo, tiene muchas cosas buenas y quiero mencionar especialmente el vestuario, a mi me gustan las películas de época, y el inmenso trabajo llevado a cabo para recrear uniformes, banderas y vestimenta de la época fue algo impresionante, eso si me hice sentir que estaba viendo todo el espíritu de la revolución Francesa y sus consecuencias. La puesta en escena, al fotografía, sin duda hacen que sea una producción digna de la pantalla grande. Otro punto a su favor son las recreaciones belícas, las batallas que se muestran pienso que estan bien coreografiadas, ya antes en Gladiador, Riddley Scott nos mostró al general Máximo Décimo Meridio combatiendo con sus legiones a los fieros bárbaros del norte de Europa, y aquí sin duda hace gala de su genio para recrear buenas batallas que sin duda en la pantalla grande se ven impresionantes.

Recapitulating a little, if you want to enjoy good war cinema, with good battles and a love story, you will undoubtedly enjoy this film, but if you have a minimum of information about who Napoléon Bonaparte was, your brain will short circuit when you start to see certain things that never happened, or not as the director tells them. So, this film is not a biographical documentary, I think in essence none of it is, but this one takes so many liberties that it completely disfigures Napoleon, so enjoy it the best way you can.
