The King (2019) [ENG-ESP]

Previously, movies of the Middle Ages was one of my favorite genres, I liked to see many productions about the monarchy, the reigns and if they were based on real events, so much the better. I must say that for a while now I started to lose a little interest, but there is nothing better than some free time to watch a good movie, such is the case of The King, the film I am going to talk about today.

Anteriormente, las películas de la edad media era uno de mis géneros favoritos, me gustaban ver muchas producciones sobre la monarquía, los reinados y si eran basadas en hechos reales, mucho mejor. Debo decir que de un tiempo para acá le empecé a perder un poco de interés, pero nada mejor que un tiempo libre para ver una buena película, tal es el caso de The King, el filme de la cual les voy a hablar el día de hoy.

The King is a 2019 Australian film, which was directed by David Michôd, who also had a great participation in the script, along with Joel Edgerton. What is the film about? Well, it tells us the story of Hal, a principle who is not very happy with the way of reigning of his terrible father, for which he decided to abandon the monarchy, to be immersed in alcohol and girls, for which he is very criticized. The young man liked to live with the commoners, simply not to have to do anything with his father, much less fulfill his duties. A story that I found quite interesting and that the role felt I could enjoy it very much, as was the case.

The King (que la traducción en español es El rey) es una película australiana de 2019, que fue dirigida por David Michôd, que también tuvo una gran participación en el guion, junto a Joel Edgerton. ¿De qué trata el filme? Pues nos cuenta la historia de Hal, un principio que no está muy contento con la forma de reinar de su terrible padre, por lo cual decidí abandonar la monarquía, para estar sumergido en el alcohol y las chicas, por la cual es muy criticado. El joven le gustaba vivir con los plebeyos, simplemente para no tener que ver nada con su padre y mucho menos cumplir con sus deberes. Una historia que se me hizo bastante interesante y que el papel sentía que podría disfrutarla mucho, tal como fue el caso.

When his father falls ill, Hal decides to become the new king, in order to change things and that his reign is very different from his father's, so he must deal with many things, such as the constant wars between the monarchs of the time. We know that in those times wars were constant, each king wanted to conquer much more territory, in order to expand their domains and wealth, but this was not the wishes of Henry V, as the Hal was named, after the coronation. Spending time with the commoners, Hal had a mentor, but more than that was his great friend, an inseparable companion, a knight named John Falstaff.

Cuando su padre enferma, Hal decide convertirse en el nuevo rey, con la finalidad de cambiar las cosas y que su reinado sea muy distinto al de su padre, por lo que debe lidiar con muchas cosas, como las constantes guerras entre los monarcas de la época. Sabemos que esos tiempos las guerras eran constante, cada rey quería conquistar muchas más territorio, con la finalidad de ampliar sus dominios y riquezas, pero esto no eran los deseos de Enrique V, como se nombró al Hal, luego de la coronación. Al pasar el tiempo con los plebeyos, Hal tenía un mentor, pero más que eso era su gran amigo, un compañero inseparable, un caballero llamado John Falstaff.

The plot of the film is not bad, although in the end it was not what I expected, since I wanted to know more about the development of the characters, including Hal himself. The film shows us how the integration and deception was common at the time, with the simple reason of wanting to expand the wealth and money, not only of the kings, but of those who make up the court and those who advise the king, as happened to Henry V, who had to see innocent people die, just for the vanity of the people. When Hal is young, it is easier to manipulate, but also history teaches us that from mistakes we learn, the important thing is to continue and see things in a different way, and never give up your beliefs.

La trama de la película no es mala, aunque al final no resultó lo que esperaba, ya que quería conocer más el desarrollo de los personajes, incluso del mismo Hal. La película nos muestra como la integra y en el engaño era algún común en la época, con la sencilla razón de querer expandir las riquezas y el dinero, no solo de los reyes, sino de aquellos que conforman la corte y quienes aconsejan al rey, tal como le sucedió a Enrique V, quien tuvo que ver morir a inocentes, tan solo por la vanidad de las personas. Al Hal ser joven, es más fácil de manipular, pero también la historia nos enseña que de los errores se aprende, lo importante es continuar y ver las cosas de una manera diferente, y una nunca abanar sus creencias.

Hal (Henry V) is played by Timotheé Chamalet, playing a great role and being one of my favorite characters, along with John Falstaff, being Joel Edgerton who brought the role to life. Most of the story centered around these two characters. The cast of the film was quite good, although I must say that I feel that next to the story it is not the film's strongest suit. The photography, sets and costumes are to my liking, being the most attractive of this film and that we can enjoy this story of the Middle Ages, of the 14th Century.

Hal (Henry V) is played by Timotheé Chamalet, playing a great role and being one of my favorite characters, along with John Falstaff, with Joel Edgerton bringing the role to life. Most of the story centered around these two characters. The cast of the film was quite good, although I must say that I feel that next to the story it is not the film's strongest suit. I also neglected to mention Robert Pattinson's participation as Louis, Dauphin Prince of France, another character I liked, although he didn't last long in the plot. The photography, scenery and costumes are to my liking, being the most attractive of this film and that we can enjoy this story of the Middle Ages, the fourteenth century.

Hal (Enrique V) es interpretado por Timotheé Chamalet, haciendo un gran papel y siendo uno de mis personajes favorito, junto a John Falstaff, siendo Joel Edgerton quien le dio vida al papel. La mayor parte de la historia se centró en estos dos personajes. El reparto de la película fue bastante bueno, aunque debo decir que siento que junto a la historia no es el fuerte del filme. También se me pasó por alto mencionar la participación de Robert Pattinson como Luis, Delfín príncipe de Francia, otro personaje que me gustó, aunque no duro mucho tiempo en la trama. La fotografía, los escenarios y el vestuario sí que son de mi agrado, siendo de lo más atractivo de esta película y que podemos disfrutar de esta historia de la edad media, del Siglo XIV.

The director's work was good, although I missed a little more in the story that was presented, see a little more character development and not a more general story as I saw it. The soundtrack is another aspect that I feel saved the movie, as it has moments of intrigue of what is going to happen, you can really feel the tension of the moment and it is something that I value in this movie. Another point to say is the lack of battle, only twice battles were seen, something that is quite rare for the genre of this film which is adventure and drama, although the latter can be seen a little more.

El trabajo del director estuvo bien, aunque me faltó un poco más en la historia que se presentó, ver un poco más el desarrollo de los personajes y no una historia más general como fue que lo vi. La banda sonora es otro de los aspectos que siento que salvó a la película, ya que tiene momentos de intrigas de lo que va a suceder, se siente realmente la tensión del momento y es algo de lo que valoro de esta película. Otro punto a decir es la falta de batalla, solo en dos oportunidades se vieron batallas, algo que es bastante raro para el género de esta película que es la aventura y el drama, aunque este segundo sí se puede ver un poco más.

In conclusion, I can tell you that The King is a film whose story has great potential, although I think it was wasted. This does not mean that the film is bad, because it is not, you can still have a good time, it was just the sensations it left me with. Another point that disappointed me was the lack of battles, something that was very common in the era in which the story was based. A lot of dialogues and less adventures. The cast was pretty good, although the strong point of the film is the soundtrack and photography, where some sequences and scenes I loved, especially in some of the battles that we can see.

En conclusión, les puedo decir que The King es una película cuya historia tiene un gran potencial, aunque creo que se desaprovechó. Esto no quiere decir que el filme esté mal, porque no es así, igual se puede pasar un rato agradable, tan solo fueron las sensaciones que me dejó. Otro punto que me decepcionó fue la falta de batallas, algo que era muy común en la época a la cual estaba basada la historia. Muchos diálogos y menos aventuras. El reparto estuvo bastante bien, aunque el fuerte de la película es la banda sonora y la fotografía, donde algunas secuencias y escenas me encantaron, sobre todo en unas de las batallas que podemos ver.

Would I recommend the film? Well, despite the negative aspects that I mention, I would recommend it, especially if you like the genre. The score I would give it is a 7, a correct movie.

¿Recomendaría la película? Pues a pesar de los aspectos negativos que les menciono, siendo que si la podría recomendar, sobre todo si les gusta el género. La puntuación que le daría es un 7, una película correcta.
