Barry: Fourth season and series finale / Cuarta temporada y Final de la serie

When I started watching Succession I was so focused that I didn't even know that season four of Barry had been released, let alone that this would be the last season, although from the way season three had ended, I could sense that this series didn't have more than one more season left, but to my surprise, when I checked to see how many episodes of Barry season four had been released, I was even more surprised to see that the series had ended the same week that Succession ended, ending one of the best series and at the same time, one of the most underrated I've ever seen.

Barry during all its fourth seasons was a great example of how to mix black humor, cynicism, drama and action in an excellent way and each season, although they still maintained a certain level of humor, especially the first two seasons, from the third the humor was gradually displaced with darkness, tragedy and drama, closing this fourth season with an end and with a tone of sadness quite logical. This fourth season although it still maintains many of its characteristic comic elements is undoubtedly the saddest season to the point that in none of its episodes you can hear the main theme of the series at the time of showing us the title of the series (Barry) and that aspect although simple, is quite significant and representative of what was to come in this season.

Barry the ex-military man who was "forced" to become a hired killer had a worthy ending and although I didn't expect such an ending, I must say that it didn't surprise me at all, what did surprise me more than anything was the way it ended, in itself. I don't want to go into too many spoilers, but for those of you who haven't seen it, you better go watch it and then come back to read this post. Last season we saw Barry finally arrested after all the murders he had done during the previous three seasons and during this fourth season he is seen already in jail, totally destroyed on a mental level. After certain events, of which I will not go into detail, Barry escapes with Sally, his girlfriend, and they stay hidden for a few years, to the point of having a child. During all those years in which Barry had escaped and hidden, as a way to find forgiveness for everything he had done, he began to seek God in his life, seeking redemption, but this series shows us that it is not worth trying to run away from a past as dark as the one of this character, because sooner or later they will find you.

It is quite sad to see Barry in that way, because although the character has done totally unforgivable and very unethical acts, it is often quite difficult not to feel empathy for this character because as a viewer we want him to make things right and during all the seasons and even after being arrested, to this character luck was still in his favor. This series had a rather bittersweet ending, because although I really expected such an ending, it is something that I did not want to happen in such a way, there were many victims in this series who suffered because of Barry, Barry even bringing out the worst in those characters, which until the end of the series were not compensated for such acts. The final scene of the series is quite good since it represents in a very comical and cynical way how Hollywood glorifies in a certain way serial killers in series or movies and tells in a very exaggerated and striking way the life and death of this type of people. Barry was an excellent series, with incredible performances, a lot of humor, death and action.

Cuando empecé a ver Succession entré a tal nivel de concentración que no me había enterado de que la temporada cuatro de Barry se había estrenado, ni mucho menos sabía que esta sería la última temporada, aunque por como había terminado la tercera temporada, se podía intuir que a este serie no le quedaba más de una temporada más, pero para aún más mis sorpresa, cuando me puse a ver cuántos episodios se habían estrenado de la cuarta temporada de Barry, me sorprendí aún más al ver que la serie había terminado la misma semana en la que terminó Succession, poniendo fin a una de las mejores series y a la vez, una de las más infravaloradas que he visto.

Barry durante todas sus cuartas temporadas fue un gran ejemplo de cómo mezclar el humor negro, el cinismo, drama y acción de excelente forma y cada temporada, aunque aún mantenían cierto nivel de humor, especialmente las primeras dos temporadas, a partir de la tercera el humor fue desplazado poco a poco con la oscuridad, la tragedia y el drama, cerrando esta cuarta temporada con un final y con un tono de tristeza bastante lógico. Esta cuarta temporada aunque aún mantiene muchos de sus elementos cómicos característicos es sin duda la temporada más triste a tal punto de que en ninguno de sus episodios se puede oír el tema principal de la serie al momento de mostrarnos el título de la serie (Barry) y ese aspecto aunque simple, es bastante significativo y representativo de lo que se veía venir en esta temporada.

Barry el ex militar el cual fue “forzado” a convertirse en un asesino a sueldo tuvo un final digno y aunque no esperaba que tuviera un final así, debo decir que tampoco me sorprendió del todo, lo que si me sorprendió mas que todo fue la forma en como terminó, en sí. No quiero entrar muchos en spoilers, pero para aquellos que no la hayan visto, será mejor que vayan a verla y luego vuelvan a leer este post. En la temporada pasada vimos a Barry por fin arrestado luego de todos los asesinatos que había realizado durante las tres temporadas anteriores y durante esta cuarta temporada se le ve ya en la cárcel, totalmente destruido a nivel mental. Luego de ciertos acontecimientos, de los cuales no entrare mucho en detalle, Barry escapa con Sally, su novia, y se mantienen ocultos durante unos cuantos años, a tal punto de tener un hijo. Durante todos esos años en los que Barry se había fugado y ocultado, como forma de encontrar perdón por todo lo que había hecho, empezó a buscar a Dios en su vida, buscar la redención, pero esta serie nos muestra que no vale la pena tratar de huir de un pasado tan oscuro como el de este personaje, ya que tarde o temprano te encontraran.

Es bastante triste ver a Barry de esa forma, porque aunque el personaje ha realizado actos totalmente imperdonables y muy poco éticos, es muchas veces bastante difícil no sentir empatía por este personaje ya que como espectador queremos que él haga las cosas bien y durante todas las temporadas e incluso luego de haber sido arrestado, a este personaje la suerte aun estuvo a su favor. Esta serie tuvo un final bastante agridulce, porque aunque yo realmente esperaba un final así, es algo que no quería que sucediera de tal forma, hubo muchas víctimas en esta serie que sufrieron por culpa de Barry, Barry incluso sacando lo peor de esos personajes, los cuales hasta el final de la serie no fueron compensados por dichos actos. La escena final de la serie es bastante buena ya que representa de forma muy cómica y cínica como Hollywood glorifica de cierta manera a asesinos seriales en series o películas y cuenta de forma muy exagerada y llamativa la vida y muerte de este tipo de personas. Barry fue una excelente serie, con actuaciones increíbles, mucho humor, muerte y acción.
