Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: I was not expecting anything and in the end I liked it a lot / No esperaba nada y al final me gustó bastante

The only thing I know about Dungeons & Dragons is that it is a very old and very popular role-playing game in geek culture, which has been represented and parodied in various productions, from series, movies, anime for many years. Another thing I know about this franchise is that there is a video game called: Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom which was released for arcade, but can be played by emulator and which a few years ago I did its respective review, being a game of the Beat'Em Up genre and turned out to be a pretty entertaining game, but beyond that, I know absolutely nothing else about the Dungeons & Dragons franchise is why when a movie was announced about it really did not catch my attention at first and I thought it would be another failure, but to my surprise it was quite the opposite since this movie turned out to be quite entertaining and now I'm looking forward to seeing more adventures of this universe.

One of my surprises when I finished watching this movie is that, out of simple curiosity and although I don't really take that as the absolute truth, but it can give you an idea about the quality of something, is that when I finished watching Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves I went to see its "reputation" in pages like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and it was a pleasant surprise to see that it has excellent ratings and many of the comments are in line with what I think about this product that "despite not having a very deep and developed story, as it is simple but very entertaining and its main characters, are the ones that give life and manage to develop the actions of the story in a comic and dynamic way". I already knew I was in front of a movie where comedy would be the central axis, but as a "challenge" to myself, I told myself how long it would take me to let out a real laugh or at least a good smile when watching this movie and as soon as I entered the first 10 minutes I had already laughed because of something quite funny that had happened and from that moment I knew I was going to like this movie.

And as I said before, its plot is simple but very effective, the dynamic between the main characters is quite good and they get along quite well to develop the story until the end and even though I knew exactly what was going to happen at the end, because it was quite logical, it didn't ruin that final moment at all, because everything that happened before was done in such a way that the end and that moment itself was logical and "natural".

One of the aspects that I liked the most about this movie are its special effects, since they look very good and it doesn't have an awful CGI (at least in 95% of the movie); although one of the aspects that I liked the most is that in several occasions they chose to use prosthetic elements for the costumes of certain characters, being this an element that has been lost over the years due to the excessive use of CGI, which many times looks pretty bad and falls into what is popularly called "The uncanny valley". Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a pleasant surprise of a movie and although I don't know if they will make new movies about this universe, I really hope they do, since this saga began on the big screen with good steps.

Lo único que se sobre Dungeons & Dragons es que es un juego de rol bastante antiguo y muy popular en la cultura geek, el cual ha sido representado y parodiado en diversas producciones, desde series, películas, anime por muchos años. Otro que se sobre esta franquicia es que hay un videojuego llamado: Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom el cual fue lanzado para árcade, pero que se puede jugar por emulador y del cual hace unos cuantos años atrás le hice su respectiva review, siendo un juego del genero Beat'Em Up y resultó ser un juego bastante entretenido, pero más allá de eso, no se absolutamente nada más sobre la franquicia Dungeons & Dragons es por eso que cuando se anunció una película sobre eso realmente no me llamó la atención al inicio y pensé que sería otro fracaso, pero para mi sorpresa fue todo lo contrario ya que esta película resultó ser bastante entretenida y ahora tengo ganas de ver más aventuras de este universo.

Una de mis sorpresas al terminar de ver esta película es que, por simple curiosidad y aunque realmente no tomo eso como la verdad absoluta, pero te puede dar una idea sobre la calidad de algo, es que al terminar de ver Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves fui a ver su “reputación” en páginas como IMDB y Rotten Tomatoes y fue una grata sorpresa ver que tiene excelentes calificaciones y mucho de los comentarios están acorde a lo que yo pienso sobre esta este producto que “a pesar de no contar con una historia muy profunda y desarrollada, ya que es simple pero muy entretenida y sus personajes principales, son los que le dan vida y logran desenvolver las acciones de la historia de manera cómica y dinámica”. Ya sabía que estaba ante una película donde la comedia seria el eje central, pero a modo de “reto” hacia mí mismo, me dije que cuanto tardaría en soltar una carcajada real o al menos una buena sonrisa al ver esta película y apenas entro los primeros 10 minutos ya me había reído por algo bastante cómico que había sucedido y desde ese momento supe que esta película me iba a gustar.

Y como dije anteriormente, su argumento es simple pero muy efectivo, la dinámica entre los personajes principales es bastante buena y se compenetran bastante bien para así desarrollar la historia hasta su final y si bien ya llegado a los momentos finales sabía exactamente lo que iba a suceder, porque fue bastante lógico, no me arruino para nada ese momento final, porque todo lo sucedido anteriormente fue hecho de tal forma que ese final y ese momento en si fuese lógico y “natural.”

Uno de los aspectos que más me gusto sobre esta película son sus efectos especiales, ya que se ven muy bien y no tiene un CGI espantoso (al menos en el 95% de la película); aunque uno de los aspectos que más me gustó es que en varias ocasiones optaron por usar elementos prostéticos para los disfraces de ciertos personajes, siendo este un elemento que se ha perdido con el pasar de los años debido al uso excesivo del CGI, el cual muchas veces se ve bastante mal y cae en lo que popularmente se llama “El valle inquietante”. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves fue una grata sorpresa de película y aunque no sé si harán nuevas películas sobre este universo, yo espero con muchas ganas que si lo hagan, ya que esta saga empezó en la pantalla grande con buenos pasos.
