Review Movie: Memento (ENG-ESP)

This week I was looking at what movie I could watch and that looked interesting and I came across this one, a cult classic with the direction of Oscar winner Christopher Nolan and great performances, Memento is one of those movies that sometime in your life you have heard of but you are never quite sure what exactly it is about you just know that it is listed as one of the greats comparing it to Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction or Fight Club, so today I will share with you a little bit of information about it and my review. Está semana estuve viendo que pelicula podía ver y que se viera interesante y di con ésta, un clásico de culto con la dirección del ganador del Oscar Christopher Nolan y con grandes actuaciones, Memento es una de esas películas que alguna vez en tu vida has escuchado pero nunca estás del todo seguro de qué trata exactamente solo sabes que es catalogada como una de las grandes comparándola con Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction o Fight Club, así que hoy les compartiré un poco de información sobre ella y mi reseña. Let's talk a little about the plot, the film introduces us to Leonard Shelby who after having a severe blow to the head while trying to stop the murderer of his wife is left with an injury that does not allow him to have new memories and the only thing he remembers is everything before the accident, he decides to avenge the death of his wife and begins an investigation to catch the killer but with his condition he resorts to save Polaroid photos and to make notes tattooed all over his body to avoid forgetting details he knows about the murderer.

The American film of suspense and mystery genre has a somewhat reduced cast but this does not mean that they are not the best, in the main characters we have Leonard Shelby who is played by actor Guy Pearce, Teddy who is Leonard's friend and helps him in his investigation to find the murderer of his wife is played by Joe Pantoliano and finally we have Natalie who is played by actress Carrie-Anne Moss, is a character who also seeks to help Leonard in his investigation but first needs to do something for her in return. These are our main characters in the film which as the story unfolds we can see how they change not only in their personality but in the perception we will have of them. Among other actors and actresses appearing in the movie we have Sammy Jankins played by actor Stephen Tobolowsky, Mr. Jankins' wife played by Harriet Sansom Harris, Burt played by Mark Boone Junior, Dodd played by actor Callum Keith Rennie and Catherine Shelby wife of our protagonist who is played by actress Jorja Fox.

Hablemos un poco sobre la trama, la película nos introduce a Leonard Shelby quien luego de tener un severo golpe en la cabeza al intentar detener al asesino de su esposa queda con una lesión que no le permite tener nuevos recuerdos y lo único que recuerda es todo antes de el accidente, éste decide vengar la muerte de su esposa y empieza una investigación para atrapar al asesino pero con su condición recurre a guardar fotos Polaroid y a realizarse notas tatuadas por todo su cuerpo para evitar olvidar detalles que sabe sobre el asesino.

La película estadounidense de género suspenso y misterio cuenta con un elenco un tanto reducido pero esto no quiere decir que no sean de lo mejor, en los personajes principales tenemos a Leonard Shelby quien es interpretado por el actor Guy Pearce, Teddy quien es amigo de Leonard y lo ayuda en su investigación para conseguir al asesino de su esposa es interpretado por Joe Pantoliano y por último tenemos a Natalie quien está interpretada por la actriz Carrie-Anne Moss, es un personaje que busca ayudar también a Leonard en su investigación pero que necesita primero que haga algo por ella a cambio. Estos son nuestros personajes principales en la película los cuales a medida que se va desarrollando la historia podemos ver como van cambiando no solo en su personalidad sino en la percepción que tendremos de ellos. Entre otros actores y actrices que aparecen en la película tenemos a Sammy Jankins interpretado por el actor Stephen Tobolowsky, La esposa del señor Jankins interpretada por Harriet Sansom Harris, Burt interpretado por Mark Boone Junior, Dodd interpretado por el actor Callum Keith Rennie y a Catherine Shelby esposa de nuestro protagonista quien es interpretada por la actriz Jorja Fox.

It is one of those movies of the 2000s that when you see the cover you think it will be action and you will see a lot of fights and blood but it is quite the opposite, although it does have its scenes of violence and some blood is not what the film focuses on, it introduces us to the complicated life of Leonard and as we listen to his story we can get to feel empathy for his condition and what he lived, still, it is something that the director wanted us to experience but not only that but as the film progresses we can notice the constant change of the timeline in the film and this is noticeable when we see scenes from the past, present and future mixed as a strategy that was employed wonderfully so that we as viewers could feel just as confused as our protagonist.

The aesthetics that this inverted time structure tends to confuse us about how we can understand the story but the most important thing is to notice the two main timelines in the film, the one of Leonard's story that in inverted form explains some of the actions that Leonard performed, always focuses on the protagonist and we gradually learn about him, the second important line is the line in black and white as it is despite being the sequence of a single moment will tell us about Leonard's past and his whole life before the accident. The film at the beginning feels a little overwhelming because of the constant change of time but it is crucial to pay close attention so that at the end we can understand the outcome of his story.

Es una de esas películas de los 2000s que al ver la portada piensas que será de acción y verás muchas peleas y sangre pero es todo lo contrario, a pesar de que si cuenta con sus escenas de violencia y algunas de sangre no es en lo que se enfoca la película, ésta nos introduce en la complicada vida de Leonard y a medida que vamos escuchando su historia podemos llegar a sentir empatía por su condición y lo que vivió, aún así, es algo que el director quería que experimentamos pero no solo eso sino que a medida que la película avanza podemos notar el constante cambio de la línea del tiempo en la película y esto se nota al ver escenas del pasado, presente y futuro mezcladas como una estrategia que fue empleada estupendamente para que nosotros como espectadores pudiéramos sentirnos igual de confundidos que nuestro protagonista.

La estética que esta estrutura temporal invertida tiende a confundir sobre cómo podremos entender la historia pero lo más importante es notar las dos líneas de tiempo principales en la película, la de la historia de leonard que de forma invertida nos explica algunas de las acciones que realizó Leonard, enfoca siempre al protagonista y vamos poco a poco conociendo sobre el, la segunda línea importante es la línea en blanco y negro ya que está a pesar de ser la secuencia de un solo momento nos contará sobre el pasado de Leonard y toda su vida antes de el accidente. La película al principio se siente un poco abrumadora por el constante cambio del tiempo pero es crucial prestar mucha atención para que al final podamos comprender el desenlace de su historia.

The story is not as complicated as you might think when you start noticing all those jumps in the timeline but it is quite simple, just that in order to understand it we must pay close attention to the details and especially to the names, it is quite sad because we not only see this man who witnessed how his wife was raped and killed but all the problems he has then to move on, moving on is not an option because as he says "If we can't create memories, we can't heal" describing how he has to live day after day just remembering what happened to him without being able to feel that he is moving forward. This is where Christopher Nolan plays with the structure and with our ideas about the film because when we watch movies we think of the structure of beginning, middle and end, which is what is commonly used but in this one we see how the line of memories and actions cross and makes us lose control of understanding the story.

We also see the other side of his condition which is the way other people see him because for the others seeing Leonard acting that way seemed to them as if he was faking it and when they realized that he really couldn't remember anything he did they started to take advantage of it, taking advantage of his situation to solve their issues without getting involved. Without a doubt this is a great movie by Nolan and as some of you may know from a few months ago he is one of my favorite directors so far, he manages to play with the viewer and change the whole perspective of the movie and this is a good example of that, at the beginning I was understanding perfectly everything that was happening but then I realized how things were going back and forth and that's when I started to pay more attention, I loved the movie and the plot twist at the end was fantastic, my brain was already creating millions of possible endings but I didn't imagine that it was that style, to give a little hint it's a little bit like Fight Club in that aspect.

La historia no es tan complicada como uno piensa cuando empieza a notar todos esos saltos en la línea del tiempo sino que es bastante simple solo que para poder ir entendiendo debemos prestar mucha atención a los detalles y sobretodo a los nombres, es bastante triste porque no solo vemos a este hombre quien presenció el como violaron y mataron a su esposa sino todos los problemas que tiene luego para continuar, el seguir adelante no es una opción porque como el mismo lo dice "Si no podemos crear recuerdos, no podemos sanar" describiendo cómo tiene que vivir día tras día solo recordando lo que le ocurrió sin poder sentir que está avanzando. Aquí es donde Christopher Nolan jugo con la estructura y con nuestras ideas sobre la película ya que cuando vemos películas pensamos en la estructura de inicio, nudo y desenlace que es lo que comúnmente se utiliza mayormente pero en ésta vemos como la línea de los recuerdos y las acciones se cruzan y nos hace perder el control de entender la historia.

También vemos el otro lado de su condición que es la forma en como lo ven las demás personas porque para los demás el ver a Leonard actuar de esa manera les parecía como si el estuviera fingiendo y cuando se daban cuenta de que realmente no podía recordar nada de lo que hacía empezaron a tomar ventaja de ello, aprovechándose de su situación para resolver sus asuntos sin involucrarse. Sin duda es una gran película de Nolan y como algunos sabrán desde hace algunos meses es uno de mis directores favoritos hasta el momento, el consigue jugar con el espectador y cambiar toda la perspectiva de la película y está es un buen ejemplo de ello, al principio fui entendiendo perfectamente todo lo que estaba ocurriendo pero luego me di cuenta de como las cosas iban de atrás hacia adelante y ahí fue que empecé a prestar más atención, me encantó la película y el plot twist del final fue fantástico, ya mi cerebro estaba creando millones de finales posibles pero no imagine que fuera de ese estilo, para dar una pequeña pista se parece un poco a Fight Club en ese aspecto.

I loved this movie because it's not only about understanding the plot but also about seeing beyond it and unraveling every detail and every message within it. These types of movies have a special place in my heart because I have always liked having to see beyond something, to see beyond a character, beyond his actions and emotions, beyond his past and what makes him who he is and this movie has that. A character seeking revenge so that he can feel that he can be at peace after such an event happened, so that he can feel alive again and know that he could do something for his wife even after she died. It is a complicated film but that is what makes it so great, what makes us stay glued to the screen and that at the slightest mention of it we start talking and telling our experience about it and this film earned to be recognized as a cult film for creating a different approach to the plot, for an original and painful story and for a protagonist that despite everything he lived somehow managed to give a different approach to his reality.

Me encantó esta película porque no es solo entender la trama sino ver más allá e ir desmenuzando cada detalle y cada mensaje dentro de ella. Este tipo de películas tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón porque siempre me ha gustado el tener que ver más allá de algo, ver más allá de un personaje, de sus acciones y de sus emociones, de su pasado y de lo que lo hace ser quien es y está película tiene eso. Un personaje que busca venganza para poder sentir que podrá estar en paz luego de que ocurriera tal evento, para poder sentirse vivo de nuevo y así saber que pudo hacer algo por su esposa incluso luego de muerta. Es una película complicada pero eso es lo que la hace tan genial, lo que hace que nos quedemos pegados a la pantalla y que a la mínima mención de ella nos pongamos a hablar y a contar nuestra experiencia sobre ella y está película se ganó el ser reconocida como una película de culto por crear un enfoque diferente a la trama, por una historia original y dolorosa y por un protagonista que a pesar de todo lo que vivió de alguna logro darle un enfoque diferente a su realidad.
