Análisis: Misery (1990) [ESP/ENG]
Hola, cinefilos! Ayer, volví a ver una de las mejores películas para su tiempo y decidí hacerle un análisis desde mi punto de vista. Dicha pelicula es "Misery", un thriller psicológico basado en la novela de Stephen King, en donde se exploran temas como la obsesión, la manipulación y la fragilidad mental. A través de los personajes principales, Annie Wilkes y Paul Sheldon, podemos analizar varios aspectos inquietantes de la mente humana. Sin nada mas que agregar, los dejo con el análisis.
Hello, cinephiles! Yesterday, I re-watched one of the best movies of its time and decided to review it from my point of view. The movie is “Misery”, a psychological thriller based on the novel by Stephen King, where themes such as obsession, manipulation and mental fragility are explored. Through the main characters, Annie Wilkes and Paul Sheldon, we can analyze several disturbing aspects of the human mind. With nothing more to add, I leave you with the analysis.
Empezaremos hablando de la protagonista "Annie Walkes". A simple vista podemos decir que es una persona común y corriente, pero una vez que comenzamos a analizar la situación y como se dan las cosas al principio de la película, podemos ver que sufre de un trastorno mental. Dicho trastorno mental es conocido como "Trastorno antisocial de la personalidad", el cual Annie cumple casi a la perfección, debido a sus cambios de humor drásticos, su obsesión por el control, baja autoestima y su facilidad para la manipulación y persuasión.
La obsesión de Annie por Paul, resulta a partir de "Misery" (la protagonista del libro de Paul), en la cual encuentra una especie de refugio emocional en ella, pues la ve como un símbolo de su propia identidad.
Let's start talking about the main character “Annie Walkes”. At first glance we can say that she is an ordinary person, but once we begin to analyze the situation and how things happen at the beginning of the film, we can see that she suffers from a mental disorder. This mental disorder is known as “Antisocial Personality Disorder”, which Annie fulfills almost perfectly, due to her drastic mood swings, her obsession for control, low self-esteem and her facility for manipulation and persuasion.
Annie's obsession with Paul, results from “Misery” (the protagonist of Paul's book), in which she finds a kind of emotional refuge in her, as she sees her as a symbol of her own identity.
Al perder ese "símbolo", su estado emocional cambia de manera abrupta, lo que la convierte en un peligro que para muchos podría ser predecible, pues no es muy normal llegar a ese nivel de obsesión. La forma en que Paul es castigado por no cumplir con su capricho, solo nos muestra su falta de empatía y su necesidad constante por tener el control de todo sin medir consecuencias.
When she loses that “symbol”, her emotional state changes abruptly, which turns her into a danger that for many could be predictable, since it is not very normal to reach that level of obsession. The way Paul is punished for not complying with his whim, only shows us his lack of empathy and his constant need to have control of everything without measuring consequences.
Por otro lado tenemos a Paul Sheldon, el cual representa una lucha incansable por la supervivencia frente a una amenaza tango fisica como psicológica. Al principio está en una posición de vulnerabilidad total debido a que no se le puede permitir movilizarse por sus propios medios, pero poco a poco, utilizando su inteligencia para manipular a Annie, va encontrando maneras para escapar.
Es admirable su resistencia tanto mental como física, pues a pesar del dolor y la desesperación, logra mantener la calma y adaptarse a la situación sin perder la esperanza de que todo saldrá bien al final.
On the other hand we have Paul Sheldon, who represents a tireless struggle for survival in the face of both a physical and psychological threat. At first he is in a position of total vulnerability because he cannot be allowed to move by his own means, but little by little, using his intelligence to manipulate Annie, he finds ways to escape.
His mental and physical endurance is admirable, for despite the pain and despair, he manages to remain calm and adapt to the situation without losing hope that everything will be all right in the end.
Otra cosa bastante interesante que ocurre en la película es que Annie pone en tela de juicio su trabajo y lo obliga a reflexionar sobre su carrera y las decisiones que ha tomado. Esto hace que Paul tenga una evolución no solo física (para escapa de Annie), si no también profesional, pues al final, está traumante experiencia que vivió lo cambia completamente, dejando huellas en su mente incluso tiempo después de ser liberado.
Another interesting thing that happens in the film is that Annie questions his work and forces him to reflect on his career and the decisions he has made. This makes Paul have an evolution not only physically (to escape from Annie), but also professionally, because in the end, this traumatic experience that he lived completely changes him, leaving traces in his mind even long after being released.
Uno de los temas que más resalta en la película es el control y la manipulación del entorno. Annie no solo retiene a Paul físicamente, si no que también intenta manipularlo a su antojo. Aquí se puede ver un ejemplo claro de una relación abusiva, donde la víctima debe encontrar estrategias para no ser destruida tanto emocional, como física y psicológicamente por su raptor.
Otro aspecto psicológico es la dependencia emocional, pues Annie depende en ese aspecto de Paul y de sus novelas, mientras que Paul en su estado físico complicado depende de Annie. Estos dos tipos de dependencia crea un ambiente de tensión en la película y la hace aún más interesante.
One of the most prominent themes in the film is the control and manipulation of the environment. Annie not only holds Paul physically, but also tries to manipulate him at will. Here we can see a clear example of an abusive relationship, where the victim must find strategies to avoid being destroyed emotionally, physically and psychologically by her abductor.
Another psychological aspect is emotional dependence, as Annie depends on Paul and his novels, while Paul in his complicated physical state depends on Annie. These two types of dependency create a tense atmosphere in the film and make it even more interesting.
En conclusión, Mysery es un excelente thriller psicológico en donde se nos retrata el peligro de la mente humana cuando se lleva al extremo. Annie Wilkes es una antagonistas fascinantemente aterradora, porque su locura tiene bases psicológicas reales, mientras que Paul Sheldon nos muestra como preparar a la mente para ser resiliente antes situaciones de este tipo. La película explora el miedo, la obsesión. La manipulación y la fuerza de voluntad de una manera brillante, así que aún no la vez, es hora de que lo hagas.
In conclusion, Mysery is an excellent psychological thriller that portrays the danger of the human mind when taken to the extreme. Annie Wilkes is a fascinatingly terrifying antagonist, because her madness has a real psychological basis, while Paul Sheldon shows us how to prepare the mind to be resilient to situations of this kind. The film explores fear, obsession. Manipulation and willpower in a brilliant way, so if you haven't seen it yet, it's time you did.
