On this occasion I would like to talk to you about Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
A little context
The adventures of Percy (Perseus) Jackson are part of the work of Rick Riordan. Along with the adventures of Jason Grace, The Kane Chronicles, and Magnus Chase, they constitute a universe of fantasy and adventure in which the author masterfully combines great ancient mythologies with pop culture to generate a narration that is both entertaining and educational. In which modern demigod youth save the world time and time again from ancient evils. As a fan of mythology, I believe that the greatest achievement of these novels lies precisely in modernizing the epic stories of Greco-Roman, Egyptian, and Norse mythologies in a way that makes them appealing and interesting to young people in such a different and technology-focused era.
The adventures of Percy Jackson were previously adapted into movies in a two-part series distributed by 20th Century Fox. In 2010 and 2013, however, these adaptations left much to be desired for Rick Riordan fans. Especially the second installment in which a mix of the plot from several books is made and many explanations and backgrounds are left out, resulting in a poorly conceived story. Since then, those of us who know Rick Riordan's works have been awaiting a faithful adaptation that does justice to this novel saga. Finally, at the end of last year, the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was released.
The Series
The series in question was made available to users by Disney+ last December. At the moment, it consists of an eight-episode season and focuses on the story of the first book of the saga: The Lightning Thief. I just finished watching it, and I would dare to say that this time the fans will not be disappointed. The delivery is much more faithful to the original story. Perhaps because this time the author himself is part of the series creation team.
All the episodes maintain a fast-paced and entertaining rhythm; this time the special effects are of better quality than those in the movies, possibly due to the technological development that has taken place in the 10 years since Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters was released. Each episode focuses on one of the stages that allow the protagonist to discover himself and in the process become a hero and save the world. Just like in the novels, Percy is a troubled child with attention deficit, who struggles to fit in. He emotionally depends on his mother and constantly carries the weight of his father's abandonment, which makes him continuously question whether he is truly wanted or not. In this struggle to fit in, he discovers that he is not normal and that the world he knows is about to change radically. He must go to a magic camp to train to become a hero, and in this camp, he finally feels among equals. He will have the opportunity to make friends but also great enemies.
MeriStation
The casting of the series follows a clear progressive and inclusive agenda, although in reality, I don't think it significantly affects its quality. Perhaps the only questionable figure was the designation of Lance Reddick (Charon, the concierge of the Continental in John Wick) as Zeus. While I always liked his work, I believe that his physique doesn't quite fit well to embody the figure of the king of the Olympian gods. Otherwise, just to note that the characters seem very young, especially compared to their previous representations in the movies, but that is only because the actors are the same age as the characters they portray, so even though it clearly adds a touch more of fantasy, it actually makes it more faithful to the original story.
What's Next
According to MeriStation, this series has been Disney's biggest television premiere of all time. Possibly because it has a fairly broad fan base.Taking into account the success it enjoys and the extensive bibliographic material available, it is possible that we will have a second season soon, although so far nothing has been confirmed. Un poco de contexto
Las aventuras de Percy (Perseus) Jackson son parte de la obra de Rick Riordan. Junto a las aventuras de Jason Grace, Los Hermanos Kane y Magnus Chase y constituyen un universo de fantasía y aventura en el que magistralmente el autor une grandes mitologías antiguas con la cultura pop para generar una narración a la vez entretenida y educativa, en la que jóvenes semidioses modernos salvan el mundo una y otra vez de males ancestrales. Como fanático que soy de la mitología creo que el mayor acierto de estas novelas radica precisamente en modernizar las historias épicas de las mitologías greco-romana, egipcia y nórdica de manera que las hace atractivas e interesantes para los jóvenes de una época tan diferente y centrada en la tecnología.
Las aventuras de Percy Jackson fueron adaptadas al cine previamente en una saga de dos peliculas distribuidas por 20th Century Fox, en 2010 y 2013. Sin embargo, estas adaptaciones dejaron mucho que desear a los fanáticos de Rick Riordan. Especialemente la segunda entrega en la que se hace una mezcla del argumento de varios libros y se dejan fuera muchas explicaciones y trasfondos, quedando una historia pobremente concebida. Desde entonces los que conocemos las obras de Rick Riordan estábamos a la espera de una adaptación fiel, que hiciera justicia a esta saga de novelas. Finalemente, a fines del año pasado vio la luz la primera temporada de Percy Jackson y Los dioses el Olimpo.
La Serie
La serie en cuestión fue puesta a disposición de los usuarios por Disney+ en diciembre pasado. Hasta el momento cuenta con una temporada de ocho capítulos y se centra en la história del primer libro de la saga: El Ladrón del Rayo. Yo recién terminé de verla y me atrevería a decir que en esta ocasión los fanáticos no serán decepcionados. La entrega es mucho más fiel a la historia original. Quizás porque en esta ocasión el propio autor forma parte del equipo de creación de la serie.
Todos los capítulos mantienen un ritmo elevado y entretenido, los efectos especiales tienen mejor calidad que los de las películas. Posiblemente por el desarrollo tecnológico que ha tenido lugar en los 10 años desde se distribuyó Percy Jackson y el mar de los Monstruos.
Cada capítulo se centra en una de las etapas que permiten al protagosnista descubrirse a sí mismo y en el proceso convertirse en un héroe y salvar al mundo. Tal y como en las novelas, Percy en un niño problemático con déficit de atención al que le cuesta encajar. Depende emocionalmente de su madre y lleva continuamente el peso del abandono de su padre, lo que lo hace cuestionarse continuamente si de veras lo quiere o no. En esta lucha por encajar descubre que no es normal y que el mundo que conoce está a punto de cambiar radicalmente. Debe irse a un campamento mágico a entrenar para convertirse en Héroe y en este campamento por fin se siente entre iguales. Y tendrá la oportunidad de hacer amigos, pero también grandes enemigos.
MeriStation
La distribución de roles de la serie sigue una clara agenda progresista e inclusiva, aunque en realidad en su mayor parte no creo que afecte en nada la calidad de la misma. Quizás la única figura cuestionable fue la designación de Lance Reddick (Charon, el conserje del Continental en John Wick) como Zeus. Que, aunque siempre me gustó su trabajo, creo que su físico no encaja del todo bien para encarnar a la figura del rey de los dioses del Olimpo. Por lo demás, solo quiero comentar que los personajes parecen muy jóvenes, sobre todo comparados con sus representaciones anteriores en las películas, pero eso es solo porque los actores tienen la misma edad que los personajes que encarnan. De manera que, aunque claro que agrega una pizca más de fantasía, en realidad lo hace más apegado a la historia original.
Lo que sigue
De acuerdo con MeriStation esta serie ha sido el mayor estreno de televisón de Disney de todos los tiempos. Posiblemente porque cuenta con base de fanáticos bastante amplia. Teniendo en cuenta el éxito con que cuenta y que hay material bibliográfico amplio es posible que contemos con una segunda temporada pronto, aunque hasta el momento nada ha sido confirmado.
