I am with you once again to take part in the contest about our favorite war movie. For this opportunity I chose a movie directed by Mel Gibson titled Hacksaw Ridge or Hasta el último hombre, as we know it in Venezuela.

Me encuentro una vez mas con ustedes para hacerme presente en el concurso sobre nuestra película de guerra favorita. Para esta oportunidad escogí una película dirigida por Mel Gibson titulada Hacksaw Ridge o hasta el último hombre, como la conocimos en Venezuela.

The reasons for my choice are firstly that it is based on real life events and secondly that the plot is completely different from other war movies we are used to, as it is about the life of a man who earns a medal of honor for merit in a bloody war without firing a single bullet.

Las razones de mi escogencia son, en primer lugar que está basada en hechos de la vida real y en segundo lugar que la trama, es completamente diferente a otras películas bélicas a las que estamos acostumbrados, ya que trata sobre la vida de un hombre que se gana una medala de honor al mérito en una sangrienta guerra sin disparar una sola bala.

The film tells the story of Desmond Doss played by Andrew Garfield, a young man with many religious values and with many desires to help people, who decides to serve his country and it is his turn to go to war against the Japanese.
Doss undergoes all the military training until the shooting test, where they were assigned the rifle to be used in the war, but he resists to even touch the rifle claiming that his religion prevented him from killing a human being and that he did not enlist in the army to take lives but to save them as a paramedic.

El film cuenta la historia de Desmond Doss interpretado por Andrew Garfield, un joven con muchos valores religiosos y con muchos deseos de ayudar a la gente, que decide servir a su país y le toca ir a la guerra contra los japoneses.
Doss se somete a todo el entrenamiento militar hasta que llega la prueba de tiro, donde les asignaban el fusil que utilizarían en la guerra, pero él se resiste a siquiera tocar el fusil alegando que su religión le impedía matar a un ser humano y que no se alistó en el ejército para quitar vidas sino para salvarlas como paramédico.

This decision of Doss causes discomfort, first among his superiors and little by little among his colleagues, who come to mistreat him because they were all receiving heavy punishments because of him. However, Doss is not willing to give up his principles and continues to firmly defend his decision.

Esta decisión de Doss causa malestar, primero entre sus superiores y poco a poco entre sus compañeros, que llegan a maltratarlo debido a que por su causa, todos estaban recibiendo fuertes castigos. Sin embargo Doss no está dispuesto a ceder a sus principios y continúa con firmeza defendiendo su decisión.

I confess that when I started watching it I found it a bit boring because war movies are always full of action and strategies from beginning to end, but the film takes you to its climax where the center of the plot is unleashed. Also, after watching it, I looked to see if it was true that this story happened to someone in particular and I was able to corroborate that it is a story taken from reality.

It is not at all common for a person to enlist in the army to defend his country and face the enemy in a bloody battle with no other weapons than his medical equipment. For that reason this attitude is commendable because it speaks of a person convinced of his religious principles.

Les confieso que cuando comencé a verla me pareció un tanto aburrida porque siempre las películas de guerra están llenas de acción y estrategias de principio a fin, pero el film te va llevando hasta su punto culminante donde se desencadena el centro de la trama. Además después de verla indagué a ver si era cierto que esta historia le sucedió a alguien en particular y pude corroborar que es una historia tomada de la realidad.
No es para nada común que una persona se aliste en el ejército para defender su país y se enfrente al enemigo en una batalla sangrienta sin mas armas que su equipo médico. Por esa razón es loable esta actitud pues habla de una persona convencida de sus principios religiosos.

As I said, it is admirable and rare to see a real case where a person prefers to submit to humiliation, trial and imprisonment for defending a religious principle. This is a symptom of possessing a strong faith, believing in God above all things no matter what happens to him.

Normally, when a person is subjected to difficulties to maintain his faith, he almost always ends up giving in when he is threatened with losing his integrity and even his life.

Como decía, es admirable y poco común ver un caso real donde una persona prefiere someterse a vejaciones, juicio y cárceles por defender un principio religioso. Esto es síntoma de poseer una fe robusta, al creer en Dios sobre todas las cosas si importar lo que le suceda.
Normalmente cuando la persona se ve sometida a dificultades por mantener su fe, casi siempre termina cediendo cuando es amenazada con perder su integridad y hasta su vida

It is a war movie with many violent scenes typical of war, highly recommended, but it leaves us with a very important lesson: If you have faith in your principles, you will always come out ahead.
