I consider that The Substance is a film that draws a story where the protagonist Elisabeth (Demi Moore) is used to be the center of attention and have fame rather than money because money is never a problem or mentioned in this film.

What it shows us is how a female star with her years is overtaken by consumerism and is no longer attractive to the public according to Harvey (Dennis Quaid) the director of the morning exercise program she stars in, so she is practically fired.

In her desperation not to lose that fame and status that has her in her comfort zone, she resorts to a method that includes administering a substance that leads her to something never known before, which is where Sue (Margaret Qualley) appears, who is practically her alter ego but more ambitious and selfish, which leads her to a degree of self-destruction in order to continue feeling the sweetness of fame.

Personally I do not enjoy physical horror but I liked this film because of the good performances of the protagonists and because taking shortcuts and undergoing strange treatments to achieve some result is fashionable, it seems to me that the central idea of the film is not very far from reality,

There is a moment in the story when Elisabeth could have stopped the damage she was doing to herself, but the fact of giving up the sweetness of success made her decide to continue regardless of the fact that it meant destroying herself.

On the other hand, to my way of thinking, the film makes us rethink that each stage of life has its time and we must know how to appreciate each one as such, in this case Elisabeth was so clinging to continue living and feeling what she achieved in her youth that she did not mind hurting herself.

Yo considero que La sustancia es una película que nos dibuja una historia donde la protagonista Elisabeth (Demi Moore) esta acostumbrada a ser el centro de atención y tener fama mas que dinero pues el dinero nunca es problema ni se menciona en este film.

Lo que nos muestra es como una estrella femenina ya con sus años es rebasada por el consumismo y no sigue siendo atractiva para el publico según Harvey (Dennis Quaid) el director del programa de ejercicios matutinos que protagoniza, así que prácticamente es despedida.

En su desesperación por no perder esa fama y estatus que la tiene en su zona de confort recurre a un método que incluye administrase una sustancia que la lleva a algo nunca antes conocido, que es donde aparece Sue (Margaret Qualley) que es prácticamente su alter ego pero mas ambiciosa y egoísta lo que la lleva a un grado de auto destruirse con tal de seguir sintiendo las mieles de la fama.

En lo personal no disfruto mucho del terror físico pero este film me ha gustado por las buenas actuaciones de las protagonistas y porque el tomar atajos y someterse a tratamientos raros para conseguir algún resultado esta de moda, se me hace que no está muy lejos de la realidad la idea central de la película,

Existe un momento en la historia que Elisabeth pudo detener el daño que se hacía ella misma pero el hecho de renunciar a las mieles del éxito la hicieron decidirse en seguir sin importar que eso significaba destruirse.

Por otro lado a mi modo de pensar el film nos hace recapacitar en que cada etapa de la vida tiene su tiempo y hay que saber apreciarlas cada una como tal, en este caso Elisabeth estaba tan aferrada a seguir viviendo y sintiendo lo que en su juventud logró que no le importaba hacerse daño ella misma.
