CineTV Contest #129: The Perfect Guy
The day I came across this contest topic coincided with my watching "The Perfect Guy", a very interesting movie which held my attention to the end. So I decided to jump on the challenge.
From the beginning, it seemed like another romantic movie but things would soon become tricky as Leah would break up with her long term boyfriend, Dave after he refused to propose to her. She was in her 30's and needed to get the ring.
Then she meets "the perfect guy" Carter who was everything a woman wanted. He was so good that Leah's friend asked if he had a brother (so she would go after him).
He got along well with Leah's father despite his initial defense and indifference to the young man that came home with his daughter.
Then, things change
On their way back, a man admiring Carters car was unlucky to be misunderstood by Carter who became very furious, beating him up and may have killed him had it not been for the intervention of the store keeper who shot a bullet into the air.
Note that Carter kept on beating this man despite all of Leah's shouts and pleas for him to stop.
She was visibly shaken by the incidence and decided to leave the relationship as she was not sure the man he had become. Carter tries to come back into her life but she refuses.
She then goes on to reconnect back with Dave and they begin dating again, this time stronger.
But
Carter cannot let her belong to another. He even keeps a note for her on her car saying "if I can't have you, no one will".
He bids his time and kills Dave by orchestrating an accident.
Leah is devastated but seeing the watch she gifted Dave which he swore never to remove from his hands appear in her room raises her suspicion of Carters involvement but sadly, that's no proof especially since Carter left no traces.

What I loved about the movie
While the movie was intriguing and Leah battled to survive the antics of Carter, it became obvious that she needed a friend, an ally. A knowledgeable one at that, especially since it was obvious that Carter was very involved in her life despite the restraining order not to get close to Leah but his involvement could not be proven since he was too smart to leave traces.
Then came the most interesting part to me; the police officer overseeing her case asked her to come with her for his coffee break. He says this amidst a serious discussion which pisses her off but it was all a plan which he would explain later.
He had an important advice which he could not give as a policeman in the office but can give it as a friend in a coffee shop.
He is tactical enough not to also give his suggestions as an advice but tells it as a story.
In summary, he advised her to get a gun, let the first two rounds not be real bullets but used as a warning shot so that the plea of self defense could work in a law court.
So when Carter intrudes her space again, she is able to not only defend herself but also to do it and come out clean without any charges.
The policeman's story proved to be her saving grace.
I was particularly intrigued because Carter's smartness/intelligence means that catching him would have been extremely impossible.
He enters the house with her spare key hence no sign of breaking in. He wears gloves and doesn't leave prints on any surface despite touching everything.
I was scared for Leah because she didn't seem like a match for Carter but I was rooting for her especially since Dave was already dead and there was absolutely no reason why she should be with Carter despite the previous romance. He was a walking red flag.
