A Surprise for Mamma: A New Laptop
The children detected a problem and worked out a solution! Mamma's computer screen was damaged. The computer still worked, but we can't close the laptop and it feels very fragile.
The four biggest children have been saving up money for the last few months and saved up enough for a new laptop!
The specs are not super high-end, but it's enough to run the programs she needs. We were looking at chromebooks because they were the only PC's in their price range, but then we found this one with Windows installed for under $200.

The children worked hard for the money to purchase this, but it's amazing how the cost of computer has dropped so much. Back when I was selling Gateways (1997 - 2004) an entry level laptop price was well over $1000. It was a big deal getting one for under $1K.
I remember selling this "affordable" laptop many years ago.
Granted that was a looooong time ago, but today we have a respectable laptop for under $200, cheaper than most printers I was selling back then.

I myself have bought a second hand laptop for just $80 and it still works after years of using it. It's a Lenovo T470 laptop (couldn't really tell you more about it's specs) and it works wonderfully for anything I need, which is not much. !BBH
We were also considering an $80 chromebook that looked great for the price, but we decided it would be better to get a laptop with windows on it. I was shocked that a laptop existed at that price-point at all! !BBH

For most people's purposes, that sort of laptop would be fine, since it's not used for very much. I've worked with many different laptop systems, and I have to say that most laptops that I've seen are quite sub-par, with lots of corners cut. This has made me very picky about laptops that I buy. My recently-deceased ASUS TUF laptop was pretty good, and the Dell G5 gaming laptop that I have now is a fair bit better than that. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Ohh, I love this!!! First of all, that the children have been saving money to give that gift to their mum... it is a precious detail and a lesson of values and effort. It says a lot (good, of course) about the education you give them. On the other hand, it is very crazy to see the evolution of the price of technological devices, how they become cheaper and cheaper while increasing in performance. I think the purchase is very well priced. Now I hope she enjoyes it for a long time!

Mamma was very happy (and surprised) when she opened it. She didn't know anything about it! !BBH
There was a huge FOMO for computers, printers, etc yesterday. Tomorrow they want eye implants that does all that a comp does. Plus with advances in tech releases, and reverse engineering, mass production etc, parts are cheaper. It's even cheaper still to make your own computer. And without the need to purchase windows you can slap on Linux and save more money.
I used to build computers at home. Manufacturer made doesn't always equal it was built right. Sometimes I have found processor fans pointing the wrong way just simply because someone had chubby fingers and couldn't get their hands back there. But with the right tools such as skeleton fingers like mine, it's a matter of less than 5 minutes and a donut break to flip it around. Imagine charging 50-100 just to do that lol. Easiest money ever.
I'm going to check out this Tuttle book you speak of. See if there is a preview of it. Very might put it on my list to get. Slowly collecting a private library. Sorta.
What your children did is amazing and really shows how much they care about mommy. Lots of patience lol. Good stuff.
I built (rather assembled) my dad's work computer and it's still in service today - I attribute that to all the custom top-end parts I purchased back then. It is running windows 7, so it's not exactly current. I get "reminders" that the operating system is (very) out of date. But no malware or viruses, firewall is functioning - sometimes old doesn't mean deprecated. My new laptop is windows 11. Not a huge fan, but I'll do.
My children love the Tuttle Twin books and as a parent, it's a delight to teach them these principles in the form of short stories. One of the books, "The Tuttle Twins and the Creature from Jekyll Island" teaches about inflation, something that my children are witnessing first-hand.
