Criminal movies don't make a difference in society criminality rates.
Real-life criminal stories make good suspense, thriller or action movies. Watching them on a screen looks like fiction sometimes, it is difficult to believe that some of those stories happen in our society. Some movies are inspired by real facts, but others is exactly what happened or happens in our society. Movies are to entertain people but at the same time, like video games. But do they influence society by committing more crimes? I am a person that doesn't believe so, despite some choking scenes that aren't to be seen by kids.
Probably my Brazilian colleagues are going to cite "Tropa de Elite" or "Elite Squad" in English. This movie is based on a book by a former police officer in Brazil and the movie shows the reality of drug traffic in Brazil and how is the police confront it which is pretty similar to a war with heavy guns. But I have seen good movies or TV shows about serial killers in the US that scares me a lot about the cruelty and the cold blood of the killers. One example was "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" a miniseries on Netflix that showed us the story of Jeffrey Dahmer one of the most sadistic serial killers in history. The show brought some shocking scenes of how he killed the victims and how he used their corpses to feed himself. After some episodes, I was with a bit of nausea but it was interesting to see how a human being can achieve some extreme achievements in psychopathy.
But now imagine this movie but not showing the violence? Would still be good to watch? I don't think so. Not because violence is cool, but because violence is part of understanding this problem. Shocking the audience with violence is part of the message, not to create an idol. Probably 1% or less of the audience would consider Jeffrey Dahmer an idol, but these are also people with problems that would somehow manifest this problem without the movie. Most people will be sick with the movie like I did and hate this type of person more and wouldn't repeat their actions.
I was a young kid when they released two shocking video games with lots of violence. The first one was Carmageddon. The video game was about car racing, but you could hit pedestrians and get extra points, after a while it came also GTA, which brought us the possibility of being a real criminal killing innocents, robbing cars, and other bad stuff. Many people were against that saying that this type of videogame could stimulate crime between kids. Most of the kids like me had parents that educated us showing that crime is bad and it isn't good and could also bring problems in society for everyone, including the criminals that can go to jail. You can harm a person's life but also harm you while doing a crime. There isn't a way that a well-educated kid starts committing crimes just because they see it in a movie or video game.
Crimes and violence in the entertainment without harming a real human being is ok. It is only to entertain, it is a fantasy. Like when I watch dragons in movies, I don't imagine that a dragon will hunt me in real life. But for sure we need to protect our young kids from strong violent videos, that could cause a lot of nightmares to the little ones. So my answer is that crime/violence doesn't influence criminality.

#hivebr
I agree, we have two kids, aged 11 and 12 y/o and we have no restrictions on what they're allowed to watch when it comes to fighting or violence, same with playing games, I don't care when they shoot other players, it's just a game. Both of their best friends are only allowed to watch Disney movies and play games without violence or shooting, I think this isn't how the world is in reality and you make your kids to be very naive 🤔
Correct... I have two girls who are still young under 10, they need to understand that the world has cruel people, I can't raise them in a bubble. I killed many people in video games as a kid/teenager and had friends playing the same games. None of us became criminals hehe. Thanks for showing up =)
You are right, and I also think that to an extent it has some negative influence on our society. No matter how good something is there is still something bad that can be learnt there.
Thanks for sharing
We need to learn that the world and people have also bad things!!
