[PT-BR/EN] CRÍTICA DE FILME: “Nas Ondas da Fé” (2023)

Sinopse: Hickson e Jéssica são um típico casal de brasileiros em dificuldades financeiras empenhados em melhorar de vida. Enquanto ele trabalha como técnico de computação (e faz alguns outros trabalhos extras), ela trabalha como uma cabeleireira. Tudo muda na vida deles quando Hickson começa a trabalhar em uma rádio evangélica.
Fé. Uma palavra simples, composta apenas por duas letras, mas que é “algo” capaz unir (ou separar... dependendo do seu ponto de vista) verdadeiras multidões ao redor do mundo. Aqui no Brasil isso não seria diferente, mas há algumas religiões que acabam dominando o cenário, e por aqui, é a igreja evangélica que faz isso. Em um filme com um roteiro e um desenvolvimento muito ácido, uma pequena fração do universo religioso é colocada em xeque, com boas piadas.

Apostando na velha e conhecida mercantilização da fé, o projeto consegue criar uma colcha de retalhos envolvendo a religião como força motriz de algo muito maior do que ela é (ou deveria ser... e mais uma vez cabe aqui ponto de vista de cada telespectador). Mergulhando nas “ondas da fé”, o filme joga um homem comum e sua esposa dentro de uma realidade totalmente inédita para ele (e tantos outros fiéis), apresentando-os a uma espécie de “submundo religioso”.
Quando Rickson é recomendado por sua esposa para trabalhar em uma rádio evangélica da igreja que eles frequentam, eles não faziam ideia de como à vida deles iria mudar. Em um dia normal de trabalho, Hickson acaba sendo prestativo para além da conta e, por acidente, acaba sendo promovido ao cargo de pastor dentro da rádio, inclusive, ganhando o seu próprio programa. Logo depois, sua ascensão é meteórica, ele começa a congregar... Em seguida, se torna apóstolo.

Papo de Cinema
Sem perceber, ele acaba sendo “engolido” por esse universo (que na verdade, acaba se revelando um negócio lucrativo) que não tem a menor empatia pelo seu público e os explora (financeiramente falando) em todas as oportunidades que são possíveis. O modo como o roteiro promove essa espetacularização dá fé (além do seu lado mais “glamuroso”, que acaba se revelando algo extremamente nocivo), dos fiéis, e também das igrejas como um todo, é o grande trunfo aqui.
Dentro do conceito que “os fins justificam os meios”, um homem comum acaba sendo “glorificado” por uma parte da população que acaba acreditando cegamente no que ele diz e faz. Enquanto valores são invertidos, o dinheiro sempre está ao redor, ditando as regras do jogo e os próximos passos do que deve ou não ser feito dentro da rádio e da igreja. Tudo isso é explorado na trama, mas infelizmente, existe uma forte carência narrativa, e até mesmo no tempo de tela.

Ao longo do filme existem boas piadas (algumas são ótimas, aliás), mas o filme em si não é engraçado pelas piadas que carrega, mas pela dimensão das ideias que propaga. Os telespectadores que tiverem um senso de humor aguçado irão se divertir muito assistindo a este retrato reflexivo sobre as igrejas, porque tudo o que está na tela é real, mas é claro que se trata de algo hiperbólico para que o filme possa ser encaixado como um produto cômico (e também dramático).
Felipe Joffily é o diretor, e ele tinha consciência do que ele estava fazendo, mas não soube expressar isso através dessa ideia plural porque o filme acaba sendo apenas aquela colcha de retalhos que eu mencionei anteriormente, mas que nunca é devidamente costurada pelas próprias subtramas apresentadas. No entanto, ele planta uma boa semente que é forte o suficiente para causar alguns debates que a sociedade ainda precisa ter sobre fé, religião e até mesmo política.

Escrito por Marcelo Adnet (que aliás, é o protagonista e enquanto apenas um comediante, ele conseguiu entregar uma boa performance, assim como os outros nomes do elenco) e Lusa Silvestre, eu posso dizer que Nas Ondas da Fé, apesar de todos os pesares (por tecnicamente é um projeto bastante fraco no seu contexto geral), é um bom filme de comédia (com alguns bons toques dramáticos) e que critica parte do “sistema hierárquico religioso” com respeito e perspicácia.

MOVIE REVIEW: “The Cat’s Leap” (2023)
Synopsis: Hickson and Jéssica are a typical Brazilian couple in financial difficulties committed to improving their lives. While he works as a computer technician (and does some other extra work), she works as a hairdresser. Everything changes in their lives when Hickson starts working at an evangelical radio station.
Faith. A simple word, made up of just two letters, but it is “something” capable of uniting (or separating... depending on your point of view) true crowds around the world. Here in Brazil this would be no different, but there are some religions that end up dominating the scene, and here, it is the evangelical church that does this. In a movie with a very acidic script and development, a small fraction of the religious universe is called into question, with good jokes.
Betting on the old and well-known commodification of faith, the project manages to create a patchwork involving religion as the driving force of something much bigger than it is (or should be... and once again, each viewer's point of view fits here). Diving into the “waves of faith”, the movie throws an ordinary man and his wife into a reality that is completely new to him (and many other believers), introducing them to a kind of “religious underworld”.
When Rickson is recommended by his wife to work at an evangelical radio station at the church they attend, they had no idea how their lives would change. On a normal day at work, Hickson ends up being more than helpful and, by accident, ends up being promoted to the position of pastor within the radio, even getting his own program. Soon after, his rise is meteoric, he begins to gather... Then, he becomes an apostle.
Without realizing it, he ends up being “swallowed” by this universe (which actually turns out to be a profitable business) that does not have the slightest empathy for its audience and exploits them (financially speaking) at every possible opportunity. The way in which the script promotes this spectacularization gives faith (in addition to its more “glamorous” side, which ends up revealing something extremely harmful), of the faithful, and also of the churches as a whole, is the great asset here.
Within the concept that “the ends justify the means”, a common man ends up being “glorified” by a part of the population who ends up blindly believing in what he says and does. While values are inverted, money is always around, dictating the rules of the game and the next steps of what should or should not be done within the radio and the church. All of this is explored in the plot, but unfortunately, there is a strong lack of narrative, and even in terms of screen time.
There are good jokes throughout the movie (some are great, in fact), but the movie itself is not funny because of the jokes it contains, but because of the dimension of the ideas it propagates. Viewers with a keen sense of humor will have a lot of fun watching this thoughtful portrait of churches, because everything on screen is real, but of course it is hyperbolic so the movie can be framed as a comic (and also dramatic) product.
Felipe Joffily is the director, and he was aware of what he was doing, but he didn't know how to express it through this plural idea because the movie ends up being just that patchwork that I mentioned before, but which is never properly stitched together by the subplots presented. However, it plants a good seed that is strong enough to cause some of the debates society has yet to have about faith, religion, and even politics.
Written by Marcelo Adnet (who, by the way, is the protagonist and while just a comedian, he managed to deliver a good performance, as did the other names in the cast) and Lusa Silvestre, I can say that The Cat’s Leap, despite all the regrets (technically it is a very weak project in its general context), it is a good comedy movie (with some good dramatic touches) and which criticizes part of the “religious hierarchical system” with respect and insight.
