Why the Snyder Cut was a failure
It may be a bit pessimistic to consider that the Justice League Snyder Cut was a failure, but even Warner does not seem satisfied with the numbers that the film raised on HBO Max.
While critics received this version of Justice League positively, the 2.7 million subscribers it brought to the platform are far from what they expected, leaving a lot to be desired in monetary terms.
Although in theory it seems that the Snyder Cut was a project that would be cheap, based on readjusting a film that already existed, using fragments that did not end in the original cut (The Whedon cut). The thing, of course, could not be more different. Requiring filming new scenes and spending such absurd amounts of money that not even Warner herself has wanted to give us concrete figures.
Anyone who knows cinema, especially with regard to pre-production, recording and post-production, will understand that it is not a precisely simple process, and well, after all this is a business.
A little over a year ago the YouTube channel “Folding ideas” released a video analyzing why the Snyder Cut, according to its opinion, it did not exist, and why there were a series of structural difficulties that made its realization and subsequent release meaningless from an economic perspective.
According to this video, titled The Snyder Cut Does (Not) Exist, after correctly predicting what would happen (that is, that HBO would take the reins of its premiere), it is implied that Warner would never release the film, because its existence, If successful, it would demonstrate the degree of ineptitude they had in 2017 when they let Whedon make disasters with the film, and if not, their existence would be a failure, as it would not make sense to spend such large amounts of money on a project that It is not even going to contribute anything to the DCEU canon, and that aside, it would mean retroactively eliminating decisions that have already been made. To all this we add the unrefined state in which what everyone defined as the Snyder Cut was probably found.
There is the third scenario, that it seems that we come to live, a utopia where the film is a total success, and manages to enchant the fans so much that they forget of course the entire catalog of mistakes that the DCEU has made to date, with hundreds of thousands of people crying out for the Snyderverse to return.
The problem with this third scenario lies in reality itself and in how things work. When the (viewer) numbers turned out to be so low it is irrelevant that Snyder delivered a better version of Justice League, or that he totally corrected the mistakes that he and other filmmakers had been making for years. At this point in our history not only has the interest in DC films dropped considerably, but the expense will always be too high.
In short, although there is a possibility that the future with Snyder is bright and manages to deliver a beautiful universe, full of solid characters and brilliant narrative, for everyone it is too risky, it is a project where they, those who have the power, they also have too much to lose.
So no matter how the Snyder Cut turned out, we will never have a Follow Up.
Quizá sea un poco pesimista considerar que el Snyder Cut de la Justice League fue un fracaso, pero es que ni siquiera la propia Warner parece satisfecha con los números que levantó la película en HBO Max.
Si bien la crítica recibió esta versión de liga de la justicia de forma generalmente positiva, los 2,7 millones de suscriptores que trajo a la plataforma distan de ser lo que esperaban, dejando muchísimos que desear en términos monetarios.
Aunque en teoría pareciera que el Snyder Cut fue un proyecto que resultaría barato, sustentando en reajustar un filme que ya existía, usando fragmentos que no terminaron en el corte original (El Whedon cut). La cosa, por supuesto, no podría ser más distinta. Requiriendo filmar nuevas escenas y gastando cantidades tan absurdas de dinero que ni la propia Warner ha querido darnos cifras concretas.
Cualquier persona que sepa de cine, especialmente respecto a pre-producción, grabación y post-producción, entenderá que no es un proceso precisamente sencillo, y bueno, al fin y al cabo esto es un negocio.
Hace poco más de un año el canal de YouTube “Folding ideas” lanzó un vídeo analizando el por qué el Snyder Cut, según su opinión, no existía, y por qué habían una serie de dificultades estructurales que hacían que desde una perspectiva económica no tuviese sentido su realización y posterior estreno.
Según este video, titulado The Snyder Cut Does (Not) Exist, luego de predecir de manera acertada lo que pasaría (Es decir, que HBO tomaría las riendas de su estreno), se implica que Warner nunca lanzaría el filme, porque su existencia, de ser exitosa, demostraría el grado de ineptitud que tuvieron en el 2017 cuando dejaron que Whedon hiciera desastres con la cinta, y en caso contrario, de su existencia ser un fracaso, pues no tendría sentido gastar cantidades tan grandes de dinero en un proyecto que ni siquiera va a aportar nada al canon del DCEU, y que aparte, supondría eliminar retroactivamente decisiones que ya se han tomado. A todo esto sumemos el estado des-prolijo en el que probablemente se encontraba lo que todo el mundo definía como el Snyder Cut.
Existe el tercer escenario, que pareciera que llegamos a vivir, una utopía en donde la película es un éxito total, y logra enamorar tanto a los fans que olvidan por supuesto todo el catálogo de errores que DCEU ha cometido hasta la fecha, con cientos de miles de personas pidiendo a gritos que regrese el Snyderverse.
El problema con este tercer escenario radica en la propia realidad y en cómo funcionan las cosas. Cuando los números (De espectadores) resultaron ser tan bajos es irrelevante que Snyder entregase una mejor versión de Justice League, o que corrigiera totalmente los errores que el y otros cineastas llevaban años cometiendo. En este punto de nuestra historia no sólo el interés por los films de DC se ha reducido considerablemente, sino que el gasto siempre será demasiado elevado.
En pocas palabras, aunque haya una posibilidad de que el futuro con Snyder sea brillante y logre entregarnos un hermoso universo, lleno de personajes sólidos y brillante narrativa, para todos supone demasiado riesgo, es un proyecto en donde ellos, los que tienen el poder, también tienen demasiado que perder.
Por eso no importa como resultara el Snyder Cut, nunca tendremos una continuación.
