Duplicity- Tyler Perry's Crime Twist
Most times I wonder where Tyler Perry gets his stories from. Somehow I think I'm catching on to his kinda story line but he is still miles ahead. Who would have expected the twist?
The movie is a Hollywood 2025 movie and one of Tyler Perrys twist that centers around the black community in the United States and police brutality.
The plot
So the story starts with a supposed Kevin ( a black police man) obsession over Fela ( a news caster) whose marriage with Rodney (her husband) was not really stable at that moment. Just that same day, Rodney was killed by a white police man being supervised by Kevin. The death of husband hits Fela so bad and so along side her high powered attorney friend Marley, they both try to get the state sued but with the turn of events over time they later settle for 15 million dolars with the state while the state blames the white police man that shot Rodney and at that point declares him wanted.
The movie soon changes its narrative when the white police man by name officer Caleb takes a bold step to meet Marley the attorney on the case for which he is being wanted and along some important people to his story, they tell Marley how he is being manipulated and made to go in for something orchestrated by someone else. Marley instinctively looked deeper and then on investigation into the black police officer Kevins house, she soon discovers that both Fela her best friend, Tony her Boyfriend and Kevin the police guy all plotted the death of Rodney. At that moment they couldn't let her go since she has learnt so much and planned to drown her in a lake nearby. Luckily, she somehow survived and killed them all and her story got to the public later.
Morals Of The Movie
Most times I watch Hollywood movies, the narrative is that the white use their power to intimidate and kill the black in their community. However, Duplicity has given me a different view. Not all actions are racist actions or brought about by racism. This movie depicts that some acts of racism are actually being perpetrated by fellow blacks because they know that at the end the whites are going to be blamed.
Also their is the issue of betrayal. Marley was stabbed in the by her best friend Fela and her boyfriend Tony. Recall that Marley had helped her private investigator boyfriend to win some money from the police department and later they fell in love. Tony however did not have a rethink while the trio planned to drown Marley. Also her best friend Fela could have intervened but she still played on with the plan of drowning her. I'd say she got herself surrounded by cold hearted beasts.
What I enjoyed the most in this movie is the suspense and the curiosity I had while watching. At first I knew the black police guy was upto no good but I never thought Marleys boyfriend was working with the police guy. To crown it all, I never ever expected and could have never guessed correctly that Fela was part of this heinous crime and could even monster courage to kill her friend. The movie got me on my toes till the end, never saw the next scene coming.
