RE: Wicked || A Musical That Missed the Magic?

I honestly liked Wicked, of course, I'm not saying it's the best movie of 2024 because it really isn't, there were many others that surpassed it by far. Since I knew that they were going to make the adaptation two years ago, I did some research about the musical and I really liked the story, maybe if they made the adaptation of the musical in one movie, the plot would have made more sense to people (it is not the first criticism I see about not understanding what it is about), Wicked is supposed to be a kind of fan-fic about the witches of Oz that later they adapted to a musical and the events of it happen before, during and after Dorothy's arrival to Oz, for anyone who knows nothing about the musical it can be a bit confusing (I still kind of disagree that they decided to make the movie in two parts) because it seems like the movie is about nothing, but it's just Glinda telling the story of the Wicked Witch of the West, which, to me, after the encounter with the wizard and all that, I don't feel that she became "Wicked Witch" but that Madame Morrible dirtied her name before Elphaba told all of Oz who the wizard really was (which we can see that people in Oz are highly impressionable) although surely they might not believe Elphaba because of the stigma she had. For me it wasn't torturous to watch the almost three hour movie (maybe partly because I like musicals, I grew up watching Disney movies where they sang all the time), but equally I understand who did not enjoy it, I liked your review and sorry for all the text 😅
I also know a thing or two about the original story but you have completely hit the nail on the head. I think the major mistake they've made is telling the story in two parts without giving the first part a definite plot and then perhaps some suspense at the end. You know, something to look forward to in part 2. It wasn't entirely torturous to watch it though, lol. I did enjoy the music a lot. I love, love, loveeee their voices.
Let's just hope part 2 does better justice to this story because The Wizard of Oz is such a classic. It deserves better storytelling honestly.
Thank you so much for leaving a comment. I enjoyed reading your thought on this, I was just grinning all through at how intelligent and put-together it is. lol. You also managed to enlighten me without making me seem foolish, cheers to you! 🥂
I totally agree that they should have shown what we can expect in part 2, it's like they take it for granted that everyone knows the musical and truth be told, at least in the part of the world where I live, people didn't even know it was the wizard of Oz before the movie. And yes, I can't stop listening to the songs and the ones in part 2 are going to be pretty good too 🙌.
can you imagine! Let's wait and see what part 2 brings then.
