In this psychological suspense thriller, we follow Frances, a young woman who finds a lost purse on the subway and decides to return it to its owner, Greta, a charming and lonely widow who appears to be a kindly older woman in search of companionship.

However, as Frances befriends Greta, she begins to discover that this woman has a dark and disturbing side that leads her to cross the boundaries of sanity and obsession.

What seemed like an innocent gesture of friendship turns into a nightmare when Frances realizes that Greta is not who she says she is and that her intentions are far more sinister than she imagined.

Although it didn't win an Oscar, Huppert's Globe nomination was a reminder of her mastery of ambiguity and implied menace.
