At the Cannes Film Festival, it won the Jury Prize and was nominated for the Palme d'Or, putting director Denis Villeneuve on the world map.

Its leads, Lubna Azabal and Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, gave raw and committed performances that earned them countless accolades.

Villeneuve adapted Wajdi Mouawad's play to film with delicacy and impact.

From a commercial standpoint, Incendies was an art-house success, grossing $8 million worldwide on a budget of $2 million.

The accolades only grew when it represented Canada in the Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film.

Although it did not win, the nomination introduced the harrowing mystery of Incendies, set in Lebanon, to new viewers around the world.
