The Flowers of War is a vividly cinematic and deeply moving epic from celebrated Chinese director Zhang Yimou.

Spectacular in its scale, yet intensely intimate in its exploration of human resilience, this war drama sparked powerful global conversations upon its release in 2011.

Through a sweeping recreation of the 1937 Nanjing massacre in Japan, Yimou unveils the horrors of history while highlighting forgotten stories of compassion.

Christian Bale delivers a nuanced portrayal of an American caught in crisis, who finds his purpose in protecting innocent lives.

Cinematographer Xia Wenshan delivers sumptuously composed framing that honours both the grandeur and stark reality of war.

Impressive choreography and special effects distinguish the harrowing mass scenes from much of the Western coverage of the events.

Yimou directs with a steady and honourable hand. He meticulously navigates between acts of unspeakable cruelty and quiet demonstrations of the bonds of humanity that transcend all divisions.

The multilingual cast delivers impassioned performances that move viewers around the world.

An epic achievement in production design, The Flowers of War brings to celluloid one of history's darkest hours with stark candour and the human determination to give voice to the silenced.

Nominated for 18 Hong Kong Film Awards, Ni Ni won Best Director and Best Actress.

It received a Golden Rooster nomination for best director, but did not gain international recognition, probably due to its non-Western perspective.

It earned $53 million at the Chinese box office, making it the highest-grossing film of the year in China.

It performed moderately well overseas, given its $15 million budget, and grossed another $14 million worldwide.
