This is a science fiction/drama film directed by Phillip Noyce and based on the novel of the same name by Lois Lowry, published in 1993.

The story is set in a seemingly perfect utopian society, where pain, suffering and human emotions have been eradicated in an attempt to create an orderly and peaceful world.

The plot follows Jonas, a young man played by Brenton Thwaites, who lives in this controlled community, where every aspect of life is regulated by the government.

In this society, people do not experience deep emotions or have memories of the past, allowing them to live in an existence without conflict, but also without love, passion or individuality.

At the age of sixteen, the young people are assigned to their roles in the community, and Jonas is selected to be the ‘Receiver of Memory’, an honour that makes him the apprentice of the current Receiver, an old man known as ‘The Giver’, played by Jeff Bridges.

As Jonas begins his training with The Giver, he discovers a world of colours, emotions and memories that have been suppressed in his society.

Through the memories he receives, Jonas experiences love, sadness, joy and pain, allowing him to understand the complexity of human life. However, he also becomes aware of the sacrifices the community has made to maintain its apparent peace and stability, including the practice of ‘liberation’, a term that hides the reality of euthanasia.

As Jonas delves deeper into his new knowledge, he begins to question the rules of his society and the cost of conformity. He feels increasingly isolated from his friends and family, who cannot understand his transformation and his desire to experience life to the fullest.

His relationship with Fiona, a close friend played by Odeya Rush, becomes complicated as Jonas realises that his feelings for her are part of the emotions that his community has suppressed.
