The Lobster, a sci-fi/black comedy film

Image
This is a sci-fi/black comedy film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The story is set in a dystopian future where singleness is considered a crime, and single people are forced to find a partner within a certain period of time.
If they fail to do so, they are transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the forest.
The main character, David, played by Colin Farrell, is a man who has just lost his wife and finds himself in this desperate situation. At the beginning of the film, David is taken to a hotel where he must comply with the strict rules of the place.
In this hotel, single people have 45 days to find a partner. During their stay, they participate in activities designed to foster romantic connection, such as dating and workshops, but they also face the pressure of being constantly observed and evaluated.

As David tries to adjust to life at the hotel, he realises the absurdity of the system around him. Relationships are reduced to mere rule-following, and love becomes a superficial transaction.
David feels increasingly trapped in an environment that dehumanises emotional connections. Throughout the film, secondary characters are introduced that reflect different attitudes towards love and loneliness, enriching the narrative and deepening the social critique.
In an unexpected twist, David decides to escape from the hotel and joins a group of ‘rebel bachelors’ who live in the forest, where they have formed a community that rejects the rules of the system. However, this new life also has its own rules and limitations.
In this context, David begins to develop a relationship with a woman called ‘The Woman You Can't Talk To’, played by Rachel Weisz.

Through their connection, David experiences what could be a genuine love, but also faces the risks of being discovered by the authorities of the system.
The film tackles profound themes such as social pressure, loneliness, the search for love and the nature of human relationships.
Through its distinctive visual style and peculiar tone, ‘The Lobster’ invites viewers to reflect on society's expectations of relationships and the search for true love.
Lanthimos' direction, together with the performance of a talented cast, creates a unique atmosphere that combines dark humour with incisive social criticism.
