"The Mission", in my top 3 of all times

Roland Joffé's moving historical epic "The Mission", directed by Roland Joffé in 1986, is a masterpiece that left its mark on my sensibility.
Its impeccable technical execution, with exquisite cinematography by Chris Menges, immerses the viewer in the exotic South American jungle.
Filmed in natural settings in Argentina, such as the Iguazú Falls, and in Colombia, the film was shot on location.

Ennio Morricone's soundtrack is among the best of his career, helping to convey a devastating emotional charge.
But delivering the best performances of their careers are Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, both of whom earned Oscar nominations for their complex roles.
Joffé delicately and precisely depicts the evangelising work of the Jesuits and their clashes with the Spanish Empire.
The screenplay written by Robert Bolt sets the plot in the 17th century at the height of the decades-long war between Spain and Portugal over the colonisation of the Americas.

Few films have portrayed colonialism with such historical aplomb and humanist commitment as this one.
It received 7 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for De Niro/Irons and won the statuette for Best Cinematography, which was well deserved.
It is simply a cinematic pinnacle that will live on forever. In my top 3 of all times.
