Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams | Humanity sucks at living

Many years ago a friend recommended this series to me and since then it was on my list, until finally this year I decided to watch it, the truth, it took me longer than I expected, Philip K. Dick's work is incredible and no one can say otherwise, and many chapters of this series did not feel Sci Fi enough for my taste, then, instead of enjoying and watching them, I kept criticizing them, not with all, not always, but still, that took away part of the overall enjoyment of the whole series.

Eletric Dreams is based on stories by Philip K. Dick, futuristic stories full of science fiction that span from fifty years, to five thousand years, stories that demonstrate over and over again in a way how screwed up humanity, or humans almost in general, are. We are given ten different stories, one per chapter, which individually may work, but as a complete set don't seem to quite fit together, and there's a reason for that, which I'll tell you more about later.

Hace muchos años una amiga me recomendó esta serie y desde ese entonces estaba en mi lista, hasta que finalmente este año decidí verla, la verdad, me tomó más tiempo de lo que esperaba, el trabajo de Philip K. Dick es increíble y nadie puede decir lo contrario, y muchos capítulos de esta serie no se sentían lo suficientemente Sci Fi para mi gusto, entonces, en vez de disfrutarlos y verlos, me la pasaba criticándolos, no con todos, no siempre, pero igual, eso le quitaba parte del disfrute general a toda la serie.

Eletric Dreams está basada en historias de Philip K. Dick, historias futuristas llenas de ciencia ficción que abarcan desde cincuenta años, hasta cinco mil años, historias que demuestran una y otra vez en cierta forma lo jodida que está la humanidad, o los humanos casi en general. Nos dan diez historias diferentes, una por capítulo, que individualmente pueden llegar a funcionar, pero como un conjunto completo no parecen encajar del todo, y hay una razón para eso, que les diré más adelante.

Before mentioning what I liked, I will say what I didn't like, and that is that it lacked a lot of Sci Fi, it seemed more like Black Mirror stories than anything else, and no, it is not what I would expect from a work of PKD, and that is exactly the reason, because I have not read the stories on which the chapters of the series were based, but according to people who did read the stories and were eager to see the series, they ended in complete disappointment because they made too many changes, almost just took the main idea and developed it in a thousand different ways, creating a huge divergence between the original story and the story represented in the series, and as I said, they were not good changes at all, because it feels like you are watching an outdated story and things do not end up fitting, because they took something already perfect and tried to create something different, but ended up damaging the raw material that they had in a perfect state without needing any alteration, that said, I proceed with what I liked.

Antes de mencionar lo que me gustó, diré lo que no me gustó, y es que le faltaba mucho Sci Fi, parecían más historias de Black Mirror que otra cosa, y no, no es lo que esperaría de una obra de PKD, y esa es justamente la razón, pues yo no he leído las historias en las que se basaron los capítulos de la serie, pero según personas que sí leyeron las historias y tenían muchas ganas de ver la serie, terminaron en completa decepción porque hicieron demasiados cambios, casi que solo tomaron la idea principal y la desarrollaron de mil formas diferentes, creando una divergercia muy gigante entre la historia original y la historia representada en la serie, y como les dije, no fueron cambios del todo buenos, porque se siente como si se estuviera viendo una historia desfasada y las cosas no terminan de encajar, pues tomaron algo ya perfecto y trataron de crear algo diferente, pero terminaron dañando la materia prima que tenían en un estado perfecto sin que necesitara alteración alguna, dicho esto, procedo con lo que me gustó.

My favorite chapter is Real Life, the first main reason is because a lesbian couple are the main characters, and that's already winning for me, and the second main reason is because it deals with one of my favorite topics, which is dreaming and feeling that the dream is in fact reality, and doubting that your reality is real, then you don't get to know what is real and what is a dream. I suffered and lived through everything that happened in that chapter, and I cried with the ending, it was the only chapter that made me cry, and that I cry with everything, but with the rest of the chapters I couldn't get to connect as I did with this one.

My second favorite chapter was The Hood Maker, where there are people who have telepathy and use it to communicate with each other, as well as read people's minds, and there is a whole organization to fight against them, and it's amazing. Another thing I liked about the series is that it has great actors that I never thought I'd see here: Bryan Cranston, Steve Buscemi, Richard Madden, Timothy Spall, Anna Paquin, among many others.

Mi capítulo favorito es Real Life, la primera razón principal es porque una pareja de lesbianas son las protagonistas, y eso ya es ganar para mí, y la segunda razón principal es porque trata sobre uno de mis temas favoritos, que es el soñar y sentir que el sueño es de hecho la realidad, y dudar de que tu realidad sea real, entonces no llegas a saber qué es real y qué es un sueño. Sufrí y viví todo lo que pasó en ese capítulo, y lloré con el final, fue el único capítulo que me hizo llorar, y eso que lloro con todo, pero con el resto de los capítulos no pude llegar a conectar como lo hice con este.

Mi segundo capítulo favorito fue The Hood Maker, donde hay personas que tienen telepatía y la usan para comunicarse entre así, a la vez que leer la mente de las personas, y hay toda una organización para luchar contra ellas, y es increíble. Otra de las cosas que me gustó de la serie es que tiene a grandes actores que no pensé jamás ver aquí: Bryan Cranston, Steve Buscemi, Richard Madden, Timothy Spall, Anna Paquin, entre muchos otros.

My third favorite chapter was Human Is, the beginning was very boring and slow, but once things get interesting it was one of the best things that happened in the series, Essie Davis is in an abusod marriage with Bryan Cranston and well, it's a suffering from the beginning of the day until it ends, then something happens that makes everything Essie knew about Bryan change, and here is completely questioned what it means to be human, making it clear that although it is believed that other species lack humanity, they have the same capabilities to demonstrate humanity, because humanity is not something unique that exists in the universe, and very true is that it is not anchored to the human race.

Here I leave you the trailer, which is a very good opener, but I don't know, I still see how the series could have been better following the original stories, but well, people like to do that kind of things, adaptations are almost never faithful to the original material, then they ruin something that was already good, it's not that the series is bad, if not that it is not completely enjoyable, there are many moments when you are left thinking that these people are acting completely out of logic, and it is not something you would expect, but at the same time yes, humans are idiots.

Mi tercer capítulo favorito fue Human Is, el inicio fue muy aburrido y lento, pero una vez las cosas se vuelven interesantes fue de las mejores cosas que sucedieron en la serie, Essie Davis está en un matrimonio abusod junto a Bryan Cranston y bueno, es un sufrimiento desde que inicia el día hasta que termina, entonces sucede algo que hace que todo lo que Essie conocía sobre Bryan cambie, y aquí se cuestiona por completo lo que significa ser humano, dejando en claro que aunque se crea que otras especies carecen de humanidad, tienen las mismas capacidades de demostrar humanidad, pues la humanidad no es algo único que exista en el universo, y muy cierto es que no está anclada a la raza humana.

Aquí les dejo el trailer, que es un muy bien abre bocas, pero no sé, sigo viendo cómo la serie pudo haber sido mejor siguiendo las historias originales, pero bueno, a la gente le gusta hacer ese tipo de cosas, las adaptaciones casi nunca son fieles al material original, entonces arruinan algo que ya era bueno, que no es que la serie sea mala, si no que no se disfruta por completo, hay muchos momentos en que te quedas pensando que esa gente está actuando por completo fuera de lógica, y no es algo que se esperaría, pero a la vez sí, los humanos son idiotas.
