(ESP-ENG) Abigail - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
This film has one flaw and it has to be said right off the bat. Its trailer. If you are planning to see it, I ask you not to watch it because the spoiler you are going to eat is gigantic. But is it so decisive? - Well, yes, the truth. Knowing it takes away the excitement and intrigue that you feel at the beginning when you don't know what is about to happen. I didn't see it, I heard about it from someone here who alerted me and luckily I followed his advice. Now, how can we make a review ignoring that fact? - Well, I'm telling you it's complicated because the whole plot of the film is about this and the weight it has is important.
The story is about Abigail, a 12 year old girl who is a ballet dancer and apparently the daughter of someone very important and well known. It turns out that one night outside a theater she is kidnapped by a motley crew of kidnappers and subsequently taken to a house on the outskirts of the city. The only thing they have to do is to take care of her for 24 hours until they collect the ransom they are asking for about 50 million dollars. Among the captors, they will be doing surveillance rounds to ensure that everything is in order in that particular mansion. The detail is that as time goes by, things begin to happen that start to make all the guests nervous.
By “things” I mean that little by little the members of this group begin to disappear one by one, which causes horror to be born in them. There will come a point when they will discover what is really happening and they will realize that they were locked in that house with something more than an innocent girl. From here begins the whole trance full of pure terror where “something” is hunting all the people without them being able to do much. Honestly the movie turned out to be everything I expected, a good slasher full of liters and liters of blood and guts which goes hand in hand with the suspense and anxiety of being chased in an old house full of rooms and endless corridors.
As I said the gore in this film is fundamental for it to work, this genre is characterized by that and it will always work, indeed I would say that it is mandatory that this ends up happening. There are decapitations, dismemberments, body explosions, yes, just as you read it; but there is also the typical terror of the unknown and uncertain. That formula of a group of people locked up in a place where there is also a murderer, creature, entity, etc. and that begins to generate anxiety and suspense in everyone, including the spectators, for me will always be top. Of course, it has to be well done and coherent because if it doesn't fall into the Scary Movie type comedy and the sense of terror is completely lost.
The scenes are brutal. The amounts of blood you will see are appropriate to the genre, for some it may seem exaggerated but for me it is not the case. That this is the case further strengthens the story and of course gives the film an extra vividness. There are scenes of fights, chases inside the house which are entertaining, many of the sequences are cool, there are some that I noticed slightly false or lies, mostly because of the visual effect of the movement of the characters in question, are things that do not look very natural within the unnatural that is the plot. But yes, it meets the expectations of what is a “bloody” movie and for me it is enough.
The characters are, as I said, very varied. In the group there are all the possible personalities you can imagine. The slow one, the smart one, the shrewd one, the cautious one, the good one, the bad one, the airhead; all of them are on the agenda. Among the actors we will see Angus Cloud, who passed away last year, this was one of his last works, a real shame because he was an actor who had a lot of potential. Also Giancarlo Esposito, very sober and in a role that I had never seen him before, top as always. Special mention to the girl, Alisha Weir, who with only 14 years old did a great job because her role was quite complicated to play.
The film is very good, the horror is well vindicated with all its scenes and the atmosphere it manages to create. Gore, blood and suspense, all ingredients to make the story work. I give it an 8/10. It's hard to like a horror film and this one did it. It lasts less than two hours. I'm not going to leave you the trailer because the intention is that you don't see it. 100% recommended.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
My ex would love this if I recommended it to him. He is a huge fan of horror films. As for me, I'll pass. The story line is tempting but the gore seems too much and I don't think I can handle my heart skipping too many beats when something bad is about to happen. Your review is lovely by the way.
Yes, there is gore, but it's not that outrageous. I think you can watch it without problems but that's just it, if you don't like the genre it's hard to stand the large amount of blood we sometimes see.
Thanks for the visit!
