(ESP-ENG) Immaculate - Movie Review!

Como siempre he dicho el terror es uno de los géneros más complicados de lograr y que quede a la altura, conseguir que el espectador quede invadido por el miedo al mismo tiempo que la historia sea algo buena de contar es una cosa increíblemente difícil. Immaculate es lo nuevo de Sydney Sweeney, esta actriz que salió de Euphoria y que poco a poco se ha hecho un especio en Hollywood; es un film que toca una de las aristas del terror: el religioso, para muchos el que más impacto genera, me incluyo. Pero no es lo que se piensa, la cosa no va por los lados de los sobrenatural, por el contrario es una trama mucho más terrenal y que para mi podría ser hasta más temible y es aquella que nos habla del fanatismo dentro de la religión.

As I have always said, horror is one of the most difficult genres to achieve and to make it live up to, getting the viewer to be invaded by fear at the same time that the story is something good to tell is an incredibly difficult thing to do. Immaculate is the new film by Sydney Sweeney, this actress who came out of Euphoria and who little by little has made a niche for herself in Hollywood; it is a film that touches one of the edges of horror: the religious, for many the one that generates the most impact, including myself. But it is not what you think, the thing does not go on the sides of the supernatural, on the contrary it is a much more earthly plot and that for me could be even more frightening and is the one that tells us about fanaticism within religion.

Esta historia de horror comienza con Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), una joven que está llena de fe y devoción y que está buscando el verdadero significado de su vida a través del llamado de Dios. Es por esto que decide irse a lo más apartado de Italia, cerca de la Toscana, a un convento el cual de buenas a primeras parece el típico lugar de retiro lleno de paz y tranquilidad. Allí es recibida por el padre Tedeschi (Álvaro Morte) y las hermanas que haya habitan. Cecilia poco a poco se comienza a integrar a su nueva vida y a entender un poco la dinámica de todo aquello que es nuevo para ella. El detalle es que a medida que ella va haciendo eso también se va dando cuenta de que hay ciertas cosas un tanto raras y extrañas que no van de la mano con lo que es aquel lugar.

This horror story begins with Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), a young woman who is full of faith and devotion and who is searching for the true meaning of her life through the call of God. This is why she decides to go to the farthest reaches of Italy, near Tuscany, to a convent which at first glance seems like a typical retreat full of peace and tranquility. There she is received by Father Tedeschi (Álvaro Morte) and the sisters who live there. Cecilia gradually begins to integrate into her new life and to understand the dynamics of everything that is new to her. The detail is that as she does so, she also realizes that there are certain things that are a little strange and strange that do not go hand in hand with what that place is.

Resulta que todo aquello esconde un secreto, como se diría coloquialmente, no todo lo que brilla es oro y eso es una cosa que pronto la novicia Cecilia va a descubrir en sus propias carnes. Es aquí cuando arranca un poco la trama, todo se va volviendo más denso, pesado y oscuro conforme van pasando los días, al punto de que así sea por cuestiones de segundos Cecilia se puede llegar a cuestionar la decisión de haber llegado a aquel sitio. Como dije es un terror en toda regla que toca aspectos religiosos los cuales siempre van a adornar y a dar un aura mucho más terrorífica a pesar de que todo aquello signifique algo distinto.

It is here when the plot starts a little, everything becomes denser, heavier and darker as the days go by, to the point that even for a matter of seconds Cecilia may come to question the decision to have come to that place. As I said, it is a full-fledged horror that touches on religious aspects which will always embellish and give a much more terrifying aura, even though it all means something different.

Este horror llevado al campo de Dios toca temas como la fe y la devoción extrema al punto de que al mínimo cuestionamiento pueden haber consecuencias. Al contrario de lo que yo pensaba no es un film que toque aspectos sobrenaturales, si estás esperando eso sencillamente no va a pasar, pero si toca temas que para mi son más turbios y peligrosos y es que en la religión católica, en todas la verdad, existen personas que llevan sus creencias a un nivel más arriba de lo que podría ser considerado "sano" llegando a ser un peligro inminente si todo aquello se sale de control. Esta es la verdadera premisa de esta película. De ahí a que este terror sea un poco diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver cuando se habla de la religión en este género.

This horror taken to the field of God touches on issues such as faith and extreme devotion to the point that the slightest questioning can have consequences. Contrary to what I thought, it is not a film that touches on supernatural aspects, if you are expecting that it is simply not going to happen, but it does touch on issues that for me are more murky and dangerous and that is that in the Catholic religion, in all truth, there are people who take their beliefs to a level above what could be considered "healthy" becoming an imminent danger if all that gets out of control. This is the true premise of this film. Hence, this horror is a bit different from what we are used to seeing when talking about religion in this genre.

Sabiendo de que va hay que hacerse la pregunta: asusta, da miedo? - en lo personal nunca me sentí amenazado por ese miedo que siempre está en el ambiente pero si que es verdad que tiene sus escenas que pueden incomodar a personas que sean más sensibles. Lo que sí les puedo decir que existe el gore, hay sangre y demás que particularmente siempre me va a gustar porque adorna el film y porque esa mezcla entre el entorno religioso con un poco de brutalidad siempre va a quedar bien. Todas esas escenas están bien logradas. La película dura hora y media, otro punto a favor, y en todo ese tiempo no te aburres porque sabes que algo pasa en ese sitio pero no sabes que es hasta el mero final por lo que la expectativa siempre la tendrán hasta finalizar el film.

Knowing what it is about, you have to ask yourself the question: is it scary? - Personally I never felt threatened by that fear that is always in the atmosphere but it is true that it has its scenes that may bother people who are more sensitive. What I can tell you is that there is gore, there is blood and so on that I will always like because it adorns the film and because that mixture between the religious environment with a little brutality will always look good. All those scenes are well done. The film lasts an hour and a half, another plus, and in all that time you do not get bored because you know that something happens in that place but you do not know what it is until the very end so the expectation will always be there until the end of the film.

En cuanto a la trama como tal ahí es donde me falla la cosa, personalmente no me gustó el giro que le dieron, es decir, la razón de ser todo aquello no me llamó tanto la atención, ahí me perdí un poco. No es algo grave, es un tema de gustos, creo, pero no fue algo que me atrapara. Los personajes. Hay que decir que Sydney es buena actriz, le falta crecer un poco más pero por lo menos el drama y el horror se le da sorprendentemente bien; su escena final es una locura, para mi aquello fue una tapada de bocas para todos los que la critican. Alvaro Morte también estuvo bien, muy sobrio. Sale por ahí Simona Tabasco (The White Lotus) con una aparición corta pero contundente. La verdad poco que decir de las actuaciones.

As for the plot as such, that's where the thing fails me, personally I didn't like the twist they gave it, that is to say, the reason for all that didn't call my attention so much, I got a little lost there. It's not something serious, it's a matter of taste, I think, but it wasn't something that caught me. The characters. It must be said that Sydney is a good actress, she needs to grow a little more but at least the drama and horror she is surprisingly good at; her final scene is crazy, for me that was a mouthful for all those who criticize her. Alvaro Morte was also good, very sober. Simona Tabasco (The White Lotus) makes a short but convincing appearance. The truth is that there was little to say about the performances.

Al film le doy un 6.5/10 y esto es por la trama, como ya lo comenté. Cumple con el terror, el horror, el gore, te mantiene en suspenso con buenas actuaciones pero hasta ahí. No conecté con el fondo de todo y para mi fue una lastima. Igualmente se las recomiendo a todos, es una buena opción para disfrutar del género. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

I give the film a 6.5/10 and this is because of the plot, as I already mentioned. It delivers on terror, horror, gore, keeps you in suspense with good performances but that's as far as it goes. I didn't connect with the background of everything and for me it was a shame. I still recommend it to everyone, it's a good option to enjoy the genre. I leave the trailer below.
