(ESP-ENG) In the Land of Saints and Sinners - Redemption only!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
There are times when we don't plan what movie we want to see, just looking for options we find the least thought and we end up sitting watching something that we honestly didn't know of its existence 5 minutes ago. This is the case of this new film by the great Liam Neeson which premiered at the Venice Film Festival a couple of months ago. As you well know from this tribune I am a diehard fan of this actor, I think that within the genre of action / revenge, if that exists, is one of the best without any doubt. This title does not escape from what we are used to see from him, in fact he looks a lot like Liam, it's those roles that seem to be tailor-made for him.
"In the land of saints and sinners" it seems that there are no sins that go unpunished or can be escaped; that's more or less the premise of the film. Neeson has a very particular way of acting, in fact you can tell to a greater or lesser extent what you will see of him and what he does in the story, so at the moment of playing I had a certain idea in mind of what I was going to witness in the next hour and a half. A film that more than action is a drama where the burden of guilt and the search for redemption is the main engine of the plot. While it is true that it is a Liam's film for me it was something different, it has the essence of always, but clearly the years do not pass in vain so the revolutions will be less and less. Without further ado, let's talk about this new story of a great Liam Neeson.
This story begins with Finbar Murphy (Liam Neeson), a guy who has had a complicated life, a war veteran and who lost his wife so loneliness in a way has played against him. Faced with this he decides to be a hit man but not just any hit man, it seems that all his deaths have a reason, they are not just because. Tired of that job he decides to retire, an epiphany came to him and thanks to it he now seeks to straighten his path a little. Clearly it will not be easy because there are many sins that he has on his back, so this exercise of overcoming things is complicated and more when three people come into his life in an unexpected way.
This takes place in Ireland, in a town far away from everything, where the IRA, this armed group that terrorized many, was still active. As fate would have it, our Finbar crosses paths with some of them and that's when a plot begins that ends up becoming quite dangerous, since these terrorists are vindictive and a bit cruel. It is right here when the possible path of redemption of our protagonist begins. As I already mentioned it is a film that could be categorized as a kind of Western but with dramatic overtones, it is not the typical action movie flooded with fight scenes and gunfire from beginning to end, it is something slower but personally it did not bother me so much.
I think the most relevant thing about this movie is the way they want us to appreciate certain characters, they look for a kind of humanization of some of them that makes you strangely empathize with someone you should not. Finbar is a murderer, why should you feel sorry for him? - Kerry Condon is Doireann, one of the terrorists, because of something that happens she also becomes more "human", why should you support her? - That duality in the way of appreciating things is what we will see here. In the end they are all looking for some sort of salvation, I repeat, redemption, through their actions; whether they are worse or better is up to each viewer, although it is quite clear at the end of the day the nature of what they do.
The action is somewhat absent in this film although there is a scene where we see a little bit of everything, explosions, gunshots, blows; this I think is more than enough because the truth is that this story does not need it so much, many times the uncontrolled action is overrated. In compensation I feel there are good performances plus the cast chosen, surprisingly is quite good, besides Kerry, we have Jack Gleeson, the hated Joffrey Baratheon in GOT and Ciarán Hinds. The particularity? - They are ALL Irish, hence this casting has been so top and the synergy between the actors has flowed so naturally.
The plot is simple, it's not one where we'll see a lot of plot twists or anything like that, it's basic and easy to understand. It has some interesting touches of revenge that makes Liam stand out. As for the characters well what can I say, I think Neeson is always going to do well despite his "passivity" in this film, he brings a drama which he also delivers smoothly. I really liked Kerry Condon, she is already a great actress and here she injects the touch of a cruel villain but strangely with an important family attachment, hence we see her to be more of a person. And with Jack Gleeson I'll be honest, it was weird to see him in another character but he did super well, good performance as Cersei's son.
7/10, it is perfectly watchable. For some it may be a little slow but I didn't find it slow at all. It is a good story where we see good locations and top performances accompanied by a great cast. It has a duration of a little over an hour and a half. I'll leave the trailer below so you can take a look at it.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.
¡A hug to everyone, see you next time!
Te va a gustar.
