(ESP-ENG) The Gorge | An apocalyptic love - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Apple TV+ has always been known for offering quality content both in series and movies. The last one I saw was Brad Pitt's Wolfs with George Clooney and the truth is that it is a great film. Until recently that was the number one of the platform, until The Gorge arrived. Starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy this film tells a love story in the midst of a hostile environment full of state secrets, conspiracies and creatures that are not quite sure what they are; as I put it in the title is a kind of pre-apocalypse, at least that's how I consider it.
We have Levi and Drasa, two elite agents specialized in being snipers who are assigned to a secret mission where they do not know the background of it, even the location has been hidden from them. Each one is located in a watchtower right on the edge of a great abyss, a place that is said to have kept great secrets and concerns over the past decades. Contact between them is not allowed, but as time goes by they skip that part. They have to be in that place for a year watching that nothing comes out of that abyss.
One day that which remains in the depths of the abyss decides to come out so our two agents must find a way to work together to try to neutralize the danger posed by whatever is about to emerge. In the first part of the film we see how Levi and Drasa's relationship is forged, creating empathy in the viewer and then, once those bonds are already formed, we see how they work together in a terribly grim and dangerous environment. I would think it's a kind of romance combined with survival horror.
The action is very good, those scenes where we see the confrontations, the final discovery of what's down there and the whole atmosphere created around that is really catching. It's weird because I honestly didn't expect anything like that but once you start to get into the plot you understand that we are facing a monstrous horror, quite literally. This fact makes the film take another level, one that makes the intrigue is awakened and the curiosity to know the reality is getting bigger and bigger. I already told you that being a horror, it is not scary at all; imagine hundreds of evil Groot, because that's what it's all about.
The plot as such is very basic and linear, it is not complicated to anticipate what is going to happen. There were no interesting plot twists or big surprises and the ending is what you can probably imagine after seeing a love story that on paper was forbidden. Movies that lack this kind of surprising elements or whose plots don't go very deep, for me, are flat or end up being just another one of the pile. I think The Gorge had tremendous potential to be something really spectacular but ended up being just another film where two agents meet and fight together in the name of love and truth. A truth that didn't stand up very well either, but okay.
The two main characters are good. Anya and Miles make a good couple on screen, there is chemistry between them, they are good actors and they have a lot of charisma. But up to that point, nothing outstanding. Anyway, I give it a 7/10. It's a good film, don't get me wrong, but for me it lacked an extra, an extra punch. Good visuals and decent effects. It's on Apple TV and lasts a little over 2 hours, a little long for me by the way. Here is the trailer.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
