(ESP-ENG) Trap - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Here we are with another story from M. Night Shyamalan, the director of Watchers, Split and The Sixth Sense. A story where from the first moment you see the trailer of the film you know exactly what is the background of everything. This director has a hallmark and it is the tension, the management of expectations, the uncertainty and that in the end almost everything ends up being a psychological thriller. Trap does not escape from this, it is a film where the premise is that the viewer is constantly in a state of anguish because we are watching the movements of a murderer who is cornered. Is this sensation achievable? - Well, therein lies the debate.
We begin with Cooper (Josh Hartnett), a seemingly ideal father who takes his 12-year-old daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert of the pop star of the moment Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). As expected, the place is full of screaming girls who want to see their idol, but Cooper is not so much worried about that as he is about the absurd amount of police and FBI agents on the premises. The thing is that thanks to the charisma that this man has, he manages to learn that the whole thing is a trap and that the police will use this event to catch a serial killer called “The Butcher” (the most cliché name on the planet). This makes Cooper radically change his way of being.
The point here is that this bloody and violent killer is Cooper. This is not a spoiler because as I said, the trailer itself introduces him, which is undoubtedly a change in the way we will perceive the plot of the film. Knowing then that they are after him, he will have to find a way to sneak around without attracting too much attention and without looking too weird in the eyes of his daughter, which sometimes happens. The way in which Shyamalan poses the film is very different from what one can imagine, I say this because nothing of what Cooper, as a murderer does, is shown, everything is suggested and it is the viewer's job to imagine how bloody and cruel it is. Something that sometimes is difficult because of how “warm” and kind he can be.
He is not the typical weird killer, on the contrary, he is a familiar guy who has managed to lead his two lives well separated but who has some very deep and serious wounds and traumas to the point of having a monster inside him. The film is based on the escape and the tension that this can generate, on the way a couple of things happen quite inexplicable that for me lower a little to how credible the story may seem but good. Personally I expected much but much more, I never felt overwhelmed, while it is true that the plot is interesting, I did not click. And it is interesting because usually we always see the side of the police or agents, here we are on the side of the persecuted, that change of vision could have been exploited more.
No action, no shooting, no fights, no blood, none of that is what you will see here despite the fact that it is about an extremely dangerous serial killer. Everything is taken to the psychological level, as a thriller in that sense it works very well. This is because everything is focused on Cooper and the evil that is contained in him but which is left to the viewer's discretion. There are some scenes where we can see certain outbreaks of anger and it is exposed how upset he is but the main course is up to each one to imagine it. The fact that I found it hard to connect doesn't mean that the film is a waste, but there is no doubt that this film is not even close to being one of Shyamalan's best.
I think that Josh Hartnett playing this murderer is what did not convince me, he is funny because there are some interactions where he made some insane faces but they were very forced, I do not know if they are located the typical person with mental problems that opens his eyes too wide or have a fake laugh and what they seek is to appear empathy and normality, well, many of his dialogues, not all, were under this premise and the truth is difficult to take him seriously. The other characters for me are inconsequential, the daughter, the wife, the singer who has an important and weighty leading role, all were very average, nothing remarkable for me.
Anyway, a somewhat weak movie, with its weird and questionable things in the script, I think it could have been much better than it was. Still, it's decent to pass the time, just because it's by Shyamalan it should be seen and everyone can make their own opinion. I give it a 5.5/10. It lasts almost an hour and a half. I leave the trailer below.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.

Saludos!!
