Una de las sagas más conocidas pero también de las más dañadas es la de las películas de Alien. La han buscado resucitar de muchas maneras, poniendo a estas criaturas a pelear con El Depredador e incontables títulos pero creo que con Romulus finalmente se ha hecho justicia, por fin Alien vuelve a tener un film a la altura después de los grandes fracasos de Prometheus y Covenant. Parte del éxito de esta película se debe, creo yo, a su director Fede Álvarez quien es un verdadero maestro del terror y del suspenso. El uruguayo y para que se hagan una idea estuvo detrás de films como: Don't Breathe, Texas Chainsaw Massacre y Evil Dead. Claramente es un tipo que sabe del género y la manera en la que lo plasma acá es la mejor evidencia. Mucho terror y suspenso en un ambiente hostil con sus buenos tintes de acción, eso es Romulus.

One of the best known but also one of the most damaged sagas is the Alien movies. They have sought to resurrect it in many ways, putting these creatures to fight with The Predator and countless titles but I think with Romulus finally justice has been done, finally Alien has a film to live up to after the big failures of Prometheus and Covenant. Part of the success of this film is due, I think, to its director Fede Alvarez who is a true master of horror and suspense. The Uruguayan, to give you an idea, was behind films like Don't Breathe, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Evil Dead. Clearly he is a guy who knows the genre and the way he expresses it here is the best evidence. A lot of horror and suspense in a hostile environment with a good dose of action, that's Romulus.

Como es obvio nos ubicamos en un futuro bastante lejano, uno en donde los humanos viven en colonias asentadas en distintas estrellas del universo. Esta colonia es manejada por una compañía (Weyland-Yutani) a la cual poco le importa a la gente por lo que algunos de ellos piensan en escapar. Acá es cuando conocemos a Rain (Cailee Spaeny), una huérfana quien junto a su hermano adoptivo Andy (David Jonsson), un semihumano sintético deciden aceptar el llamado de otro grupo de amigos a buscar la manera de escapar de aquel sitio. La idea es ir a una nave abandonada y buscar una cápsulas de criogenización para poder llegar a un planeta lejano y vivir en paz.

As is obvious, we are set in a fairly distant future, one where humans live in colonies settled in different stars of the universe. This colony is run by a company (Weyland-Yutani) that cares little about the people, so some of them think about escaping. This is when we meet Rain (Cailee Spaeny), an orphan who, along with her adopted brother Andy (David Jonsson), a synthetic semi-human, decides to accept the call of another group of friends to find a way to escape from that place. The idea is to go to an abandoned ship and look for a cryogenic capsule to reach a distant planet and live in peace.

Con lo que este grupo no contaba es que aquella nave había sido el lugar de algunos experimentos e investigaciones de algunas formas de vida los cuales salieron bastante mal. Atrapados en medio del espacio tendrán que buscar la manera de sobrevivir a la cacería que estas criaturas mientras buscan hacerse con las cápsulas en cuestión. Las películas de Alien por lo general no se salían de la mera ficción y de una o que otra escena de tensión, creo que eso cambia acá radicalmente y es que si vemos un poco más de terror y de suspenso a todo lo que rodea los personajes, es como si la atmósfera estuviera pesada constantemente lo que hace que la experiencia de ver el film por momentos sea un tanto inquietante.

What this group did not count on is that this ship had been the site of some experiments and research of some life forms which went quite wrong. Trapped in the middle of space, they will have to find a way to survive the hunt for these creatures as they try to get their hands on the capsules in question. The Alien movies usually didn't get out of the mere fiction and one or another scene of tension, I think that changes radically here and if we see a little more terror and suspense to everything that surrounds the characters, it is as if the atmosphere is constantly heavy which makes the experience of watching the film at times is somewhat disturbing.

La trama en realidad es bastante básica porque es una persecución entre estas formas de vidas avanzadas y las personas que terminaron en el lugar equivocado. Pero claro, a pesar de esto es imposible aburrirse, no hay manera de que pierdas el interés porque logran jugar mucho con la expectativa, con el factor sorpresa y la agonía de estar siendo perseguidos. A todo esto hay que sumarle la increíble puesta en escena que hay, esto suma muchísimo a la hora de sumergirte en la trama porque es terror puro. Estamos hablando de que estos Xenomorfos son los villanos pero también es interesante ver cómo los humanos no dejan de sorprender pero para mal ya que como casi siempre pasa cuando hay situaciones extremas pues es muy fácil ver la cara extremista de algunos.

The plot is actually quite basic because it is a chase between these advanced life forms and the people who ended up in the wrong place. But of course, despite this it is impossible to get bored, there is no way to lose interest because they manage to play a lot with the expectation, with the surprise factor and the agony of being chased. To all this we must add the incredible staging that there is, this adds a lot when it comes to immerse yourself in the plot because it is pure terror. We are talking about these Xenomorphs are the villains but it is also interesting to see how humans do not cease to surprise but for the worse because as almost always happens when there are extreme situations it is very easy to see the extremist side of some.

Visualmente es un espectáculo, como ya dije la puesta en escena, la ambientación, la fotografía, el diseño grotesco y bien hecho de los Xenomorfos y hasta el CGI, lo cual es muy complicado en este tipo de películas, creo que también cumple decentemente. Hay escenas gráficas que forman parte de ese terror corporal las cuales se disfrutan mucho y sobre todo todo lo que vemos del espacio exterior lo cual sorprendentemente está en un muy buen nivel. Es un film bastante redondo, cumple perfectamente con todos los aspectos, tanto en trama/historia como en lo visual. Hay un Xenoformo al final de la película el cual es verdadera top, no me lo esperaba lo que ayudó a un muy buen cierre.

Visually it is a spectacle, as I said the staging, the setting, the photography, the grotesque and well done design of the Xenomorphs and even the CGI, which is very complicated in this type of film, I think it also meets decently. There are graphic scenes that are part of that body horror which are very enjoyable and especially everything we see of outer space which surprisingly is at a very good level. It's a pretty well rounded film, it delivers perfectly in all aspects, both in plot/story and visuals. There is a Xenoform at the end of the film which is a real top, I was not expecting it which helped to a very good closure.

Los personajes pues habría que hablar de Rain y Andy, para mi los grandes protagonistas. Ella es una que quiere conseguir lo que se propone como sea pero siempre con un sentido de familiaridad hacia Andy importante y arraigado mientras que él y a pesar de ser un un ser semisintetico también el cariño y el apego es importante. No son actuaciones para un Oscar pero creo que cumplen, siempre estar en un film de estas características es complejo. En fin, una película realmente buena, muy bien hecha, simple y cero pretenciosa pero que cumple en todos los aspectos, buenos personajes, buenos efectos. Le doy un 8/10, vale mucho la pena sentarse a verla, dura poco menos de dos horas pero se pasa muy rápido. Les dejo el tráiler.

The characters are Rain and Andy, for me the main characters. She is one who wants to get what she wants no matter what but always with a sense of familiarity towards Andy important and rooted while he and despite being a semi-synthetic being also the affection and attachment is important. They are not Oscar performances but I think they deliver, always being in a film of these characteristics is complex. Anyway, a really good movie, very well made, simple and unpretentious but it fulfills in all aspects, good characters, good effects. I give it an 8/10, it's worth sitting down to watch it, it lasts a little less than two hours but it goes by very fast. I leave you the trailer.

Le daré un vistazo y espero no decepcionarme jaja. Alien fue espectacular en sus inicios, pero después cayó en tremendo abismo. Así que, si Romulus la saca de ese abismo con gusto la veré.

Si, hubo por lo menos tres películas que fueron realmente malas pero esta, según yo, no decepciona tanto. La disfruté mucho, buen terror, suspenso, tensión y lo visual es bastante top la verdad.
